Seals Earns All-America Second Team, Heptathletes Get Underway

Texas Tech’s Jalen Seals becomes an All-American for the first time outdoors.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Jalen Seals became an All-American for the third time this year, while the heptathletes completed four of their seven events on day three of the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Jalen Seals finished 10th in the triple jump at his NCAA Outdoors debut, making him a Second Team All-American. He was an All-American in both the long and triple indoors, and now has his first career outdoor All-America award. Seals achieved as much with a lifetime-best leap of 53'-0.75" (16.17m) – the first 53-foot mark of his career.
"Jalen battled hard out there," said associate head coach James Thomas. "When you come to an NCAA meet and set a PR on two separate jobs, you'll never hear me complain as a coach."
Kaylee Hinton and Callie Jones made history Friday, competing as the first Tech heptathlon duo at a national meet in school history. Hinton finished her first four events with 3,438 points to enter Saturday in eighth place, while Jones' 3,047 points have her in 21st.
Hinton opened her day with a 13.74 in the 100m hurdles, resulting in what would be a day-high 1,015 points, while Jones got started with a 14.26. Hinton high jumped 5'-8.75" (1.75m), nearly clearing a near-PR 1.78m on a few occasions. She would finish fourth in the high jump but drop to ninth after shot put, albeit still just over 300 points from the leader. The 200m was where she would have liked to gain ground in the standings, and she did with a 928-point 24.56 that propelled her into eighth ahead of day two, a stronger day for both Red Raiders. Jones used the 200m to time an 831-point 25.62 to hop from 23rd to 21st.
"Kaylee has put herself in position to fight for First Team All-America honors," said Thomas. "It's going to be an honor watching her complete her collegiate career as a Red Raider tomorrow."
The 4x100 relay finished its season after running a 39.14 in the semifinals to make the final. In the final, a missed exchange resulted in a dropped baton and disqualification. The foursome lined up for the final included Courtney Lindsey, Jacolby Shelton, Ashton O'Conner and Terrence Jones, Jr.
Saturday, the final day of the meet, will feature the end of the heptathlon as well as Ruth Usoro competing for a triple jump title.
