Texas Tech (1-0-0) opened its season with a 1-0 win over UTEP on Thursday with Kirsten Davis scoring the goal and the defense not allowing a single shot from the Miners. Goalkeeper Madison White was credited with the 10th shutout of her career, while Davis now has 32 goals which ranks third in program history. Davis was assisted by freshman Macy Blackburn in the 37th minute of play in a game where the Red Raiders finished with 12 total shots, including six shots on goal. Tech's defense held two opponents with zero shots on goal last season against Iowa State and Alabama.
UC San Diego (0-1-0) is coming off a 3-0 loss to Cal on Thursday in their season opener and first game as a Division I member. The Tritons, who are transitioning from NCAA Division II to play in the Big West Conference, had a 32-game winning streak at home in the regular season end with the loss to Cal. Held to only three shots in the first half and one in the second, UC San Diego was playing for the first time in 636 days after having its season canceled completely last season. The Tritons had not played since the 2019 NCAA Division II Tournament on Nov. 23, 2019 which resulted in a 1-0 loss to Point Loma to end a season that saw them compile a 16-2-1 overall record.
TEAM CAPTAINS: Kirsten Davis and Cassie Hiatt are serving at team captains for the second straight season. A defender from Parker, Colorado, Hiatt has been a dominate player for the Red Raider defense for three seasons beginning with a Big 12 All-Freshman campaign to get started. Hiatt earned All-America honors as a sophomore along with All-Big 12 First Team. Davis, who was selected No. 13 in the NWSL College Draft, decided to return to school to play her fifth season at Texas Tech. She had 16 goals as a junior to earn Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and All-America honors. Davis is currently third all-time at Tech with 32 career goals behind Kristy Frantz (41) and Janine Beckie (57).

A Dallas native who graduated from Duke, Stone is in his 15th season leading the program after roles at Denver, Duke and Clemson. Tech won the 2015 Big 12 Tournament and has had eight double-digit win seasons under Stone's leadership.
OUR GOLD MEDALIST: Texas Tech welcomed Janine Beckie back to Lubbock last weekend after the former Red Raider helped lead Canada to the gold medal in Tokyo. Beckie, who is the all-time leading goal scorer in Tech history with 57, is currently playing professionally with Manchester City FC.
