Soccer Preview: Arizona Wildcat Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 21 Texas Tech soccer team will hit the road for the second time this season taking a trip out to Arizona for a pair of games at the Wildcat Invitational.

The 21st-ranked Red Raiders (5-0-1) will face host Arizona Thursday night at 9 p.m. (CST) and will close out the weekend squaring off against Arizona State Sunday at noon (CST).Â

Texas Tech is coming off an undefeated four-game home stand, as the squad downed Hartford, Abilene Christian, Cal State Fullerton, and UTSA. During that stretch, the squad outscored its opponents, 12-1. Meanwhile on defense, opponents were only able to produce seven shots on frame.

In five games this fall, Kirsten Davis has netted a team-best four goals to go along with a trio of assists. Her score in the 3-0 win over UTSA was the 35th of her career – third all-time in TTU history. Macy Blackburn leads the team with five assists, which is tied for eighth in the nation. Madison White has played each minute in goal this season, compiling four shutouts with a 0.32 GAA, pairing that with a 0.82 save percentage.Â

Scouting Arizona
This will be the seventh all-time meeting between both teams and first match since 2017 as Arizona holds a slight 2-1-3 series advantage. The Wildcats are 2-2-0 this season and are coming off a 3-2 win over CSUN. Jill Aguilera has scored two of UA's five goals while Gianna Christiansen leads the club with a pair of assists. Goalkeeper Hope Hisey has played each minute in net and boasts a 1.75 GAA.Â

Scouting Arizona State
ASU, who is 5-1-0, suffered its first loss of the season Sunday to then-ranked No. 17 LSU by a score of 5-2 – ASU was ranked No. 21 at the time. Nicole Douglas spearheads the offense netting a team-best five goals, while her four assists are tied for second on the team. Olivia Nguyen though, is right on her heels with four goals. In net, two different keepers have seen action with Birta Gudlaughs making five starts in six appearances with a 1.56 GAA. Texas Tech is 5-0 all-time versus the Sun Devils with the last meeting in 2017 being a 2-1 decision.Â

Team Captains
Davis and Cassie Hiatt are serving at team captains for the second straight season. A defender from Parker, Colorado, Hiatt has been a dominate player for the Red Raider defense for three seasons beginning with a Big 12 All-Freshman campaign to get started. Hiatt earned All-America honors as a sophomore along with All-Big 12 First Team. Davis, who was selected No. 13 in the NWSL College Draft, decided to return to school to play her fifth season at Texas Tech. She had 16 goals as a junior to earn Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and All-America honors. Davis is currently third all-time at Tech with 34 career goals behind Kristy Frantz (41) and Janine Beckie (57).

Texas Tech has 33 players on its roster with 20 returners and 13 newcomers. The Red Raiders have 11 freshmen on the roster along with adding transfers in Eva Hurm (Notre Dame) and Sierra Castles (Long Beach State).

Tom Stone picked up his 164th win with the victory over UTSA Sunday evening. A Dallas native who won a national championship as a player at Duke, Stone is in his 15th season leading the program after roles at Denver, Duke and Clemson. He has led the Red Raiders to seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including to the Sweet 16 in 2014. Tech won the 2015 Big 12 Tournament and has had eight double-digit win seasons under Stone's leadership.
Our Gold Medalist
Texas Tech welcomed Janine Beckie back to Lubbock on Saturday, August 14 after the former Red Raider helped lead Canada to the gold medal in Tokyo. Beckie, who is the all-time leading goal scorer in Tech history with 57, is currently playing professionally with Manchester City FC. Canada won the gold medal with a shootout win over Sweden in the championship game.
