LUBBOCK, Texas — Texas Tech senior kicker Trey Wolff was recognized on Monday as the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference announced. Like the number of field goals he made Saturday, it's Wolff's third honor from the Big 12 this season.
Wolff provided the game-winning field goal in overtime to lift Texas Tech past Oklahoma, 51-48, and give the Red Raiders its first win over the Sooners since 2011. It also marked the first time in program history Texas Tech defeated Oklahoma and Texas in the same season and it was Wolff who provided the game-winning field goal in overtime in that contest.
Wolff finished 3-of-3 on his field goal attempts, pushing him to 18 makes for the season which is the third-most in a single season in program history. Coincidentally, Wolff owns the No. 2 ranking with 20 during his 2019 season. Now sitting with 39 career field goals made, he holds the eighth-most field goals in Texas Tech history.
In addition to Wolff's 35-yard field goal in overtime, he tied the contest, 48-48, in the final seconds of regulation by connecting on a 43-yarder with three ticks left on the clock in regulation.
Wolff also made a 29-yard field goal as time expired on the clock in the second quarter leading into halftime. He was 3-of-4 on extra points, missing the first of the 2022 season following the Red Raiders' first score of the night.
This is the sixth Big 12 weekly award of the season for the Red Raiders with Wolff owning half of them. Wolff was recognized after the Kansas and Texas wins. Quarterbacks Behren Morton and Donovan Smith have both been recognized by the league. Morton was the newcomer of the week following his performance in the Red Raiders' win against West Virginia and Smith was tabbed the league's top offensive performer after the win over Houston. Defensively, Reggie Pearson Jr. was recognized for his effort following Texas Tech's win over Texas.
Texas Tech improved to 7-5 and 5-4 in Big 12 play with the victory last Saturday against Oklahoma to close the regular season. The Red Raiders now wait for their bowl destination which is expected to be learning on Dec. 4. It will be Tech's 40th bowl appearance, which is Top 25 nationally and the third-best mark in the Big 12 behind Texas and Oklahoma.
