November 08, 2022 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head women's tennis coach, Adam Herendeen, has announced the signing of both Arina Oreshchenkova and Andreea Lila to join the Red Raiders in January 2023.
"We are thrilled to welcome Andreea and Arina to our program this spring! They are both going to have a chance to come in and make a big impact on our team right away," Herendeen said.
Arina Oreshchenkova | Brooklyn, N.Y. | Bondarenko Tennis Academy
Arina Oreshchenkova is one of two signees joining the Red Raiders women's tennis team in January. Oreshchenkova is ranked No. 4 in the United States and 276th in the world, with a career-high ITF ranking of 248 achieved back in October.
Oreshchenkova has won five singles matches against Blue Chip players and a combined 20 victories over 5-star and 4-star recruits.
A 5-star recruit herself, Oreshchenkova made back-to-back semifinals appearances at both the J3 Quebec City and J2 Montreal tournaments in September. At Quebec, she picked up wins against Dylan Gelber, 6-0, 6-0, Neda Rahimkhani, 7-5, 6-3, and Isabella Marton, 6-1, 6-3, and in Montreal, Oreshchenkova defeated Emma Tutoveanu, 7-6 (2), 6-4, Maelie Monfils, 6-4, 7-6 (7), and Rose Nijkamp, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
In August, Oreshchenkova earned her first ITF singles and doubles titles when she swept the competition at the J3 Tampico tournament. She breezed through her singles opponents as she only dropped one set en route to the title, while beating three top-650 players.
Paired up with Maya Dutta in doubles, the duo only lost one set in their run to the finals, where they came out on top against Pamela Badillo Hernandez and Aimee Reynoso, 6-2, 6-7 (3) 1-0 (3).
In addition, Oreshchenkova made it to the singles Round of 64 in the main draw of the USTA Billie Jean King Girls' 16s and 18s National Championships back in August, while also making a Round of 16 appearance in the consolation draw.
"Arina has had some really strong results in the states and internationally. When she is playing with confidence, she is very tough to beat, and we believe that she has her best tennis in front of her. She is someone who loves to compete and is also a great student, and we believe she is going to thrive as a Red Raider," Herendeen added.
Andreea Lila | Craiova, Romania | Fire Tennis
Andreea Lila will join the Red Raiders this January after signing with Texas Tech. The Romania native was ranked as high as No. 3 in her home country and has once earned a ranking inside the top-1400 of the WTA rankings.
Back in February, Lila competed at the Sharm El Sheikh 15k where she advanced out of qualifying with wins over Helene Kereselidze, 6-3, 6-2, and Katarina Sopkova, 6-0, 6-1. Lila then made it to the second round of the main draw with a huge win over 465th-ranked player, Eun Ji Lee, in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-1.
A couple years ago, Lila also was a doubles semifinalist and singles quarterfinalist at the J4 Bistrita tournament. In addition, she claimed a runner-up finish at the Romanian National Championships.
In September of 2021, Lila also made it to the Round of 16 at the Varna 15k after advancing out of the qualifying draw of the tournament.
"Andreea was the very first recruit that I spoke to when I started this process, and we could tell right away that she was going to be a great addition. She has had some really strong results at the ITF level and has worked hard in the past few months to get ready to be here. I know that she is also going to have a great impact on our team off the court and we cannot wait to get her to Lubbock," Herendeen said.
