Texas Tech led all conference schools with 41 total selections Tuesday to the Academic All-Big 12 teams
IRVING, Texas – The Texas Tech football program earned a league-leading 41 Academic All-Big 12 selections, the league office announced Tuesday.
Texas Tech led all Big 12 football programs with 41 total selections. Tech's 24 first team selections ranked as fourth-most in the league. After boasting a program-best 19 first team selections a year ago, the Red Raiders shattered the previous record after having 24 football student-athletes named to the first team this season.
Last season, Tech also saw a program-best 26 student-athletes receive an Academic All-Big 12 distinction. The Red Raiders again shattered that previous record with 41 total this season. The 41 football honorees were joined by 43 fellow Red Raiders across the cross country, soccer and volleyball programs.
First team members consisted of anyone who held a 3.20 GPA or higher, while second-team selections held a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
