Williams earns Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior Bryson Williams has earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season after going for 17 points in both wins over Baylor and Texas last week. Iowa State's Izaiah Brockington and Kansas' Ochai Agbaji shared Big 12 Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors.
Williams, who has now scored 1,996 points and 100 double-figure scoring performances in his career, started the week against the then-No. 7 Bears by shooting 5-for-9 from the field and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line for his 17. At Texas, he knocked down six shots and also went 5 of 6 at the line to lead the Red Raiders with his 17 points and now leads the Big 12 by shooting 53.0 percent from the field. Williams also added six rebound in the win at Texas in a game where Tech owned a 45-36 rebounding advantage.
Williams is in his first season at Tech after playing the past two years at UTEP and beginning his career with two seasons at Fresno State. He has played in 148 collegiate games and comes into Tuesday's game against Oklahoma needing only four points to reach 2,000 in his career. Williams leads Tech this season by averaging 13.7 points per game and 16.0 in Big 12 play. He also earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on January 31 after he had scored his season-high of 33 points in the 94-91 double-overtime loss at Kansas. Kevin Obanor earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Jan. 24 to give Tech three conference honors this season.
Brockington averaged 21.0 points last week while leading the Cyclones to a 2-0 record with wins on the road at TCU and at home against Oklahoma. He also averaged 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 assists while shooting 53.1 percent from the field and hitting 4-of-6 three-pointers. The senior guard started the week with 20 points and seven rebounds in the win against the Horned Frogs, ISU's first in Fort Worth since 2016. He then scored 22 points on 10-of-13 field goal shooting against the Sooners, including 2-for-2 behind the arc. Six of his 22 points came during a key 15-0 run that broke open the game in the second half. Brockington has scored 20 points in three consecutive games.

Agbaji averaged 21.5 points in two wins for Kansas last week. Against Oklahoma State, he led all scorers with 20 points, which included a career-high nine free throws in going 9-for-10 from the line. He also had four assists and a game-high three steals. In the road win at West Virginia, Agbaji once again led all scorers with 23 points, including 3-of-6 three-pointers and 4-of-4 free throws. He was 13-of-14 from the line for the week. Agbaji passed the 1,400 career points mark during the WVU game and currently has 1,421. He has scored 20 or more points in 14 games this season.
