February 24, 2022 | Softball
The Red Raiders ended a seven-game losing streak with a 5-0 win over California Baptist.
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Sophomore infielder Arriana Villa recorded three RBI on three hits as the Red Raiders opened the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 5-0 win over California Baptist Thursday evening. Texas Tech (4-7) snapped a seven-game losing skid with the win, as Kendall Fritz and Maddie Kuehl combined for the shutout.
The Red Raiders opened the scoring in the third inning with a two run two out rally. The rally began as Carson Armijo singled through the 5-6 hole and Payton Jackson walked to put a couple of runners on for Villa who doubled down the left field line to score them both. Jackson's run came across after the left fielder misplayed the ball to give Tech the 2-0 advantage.
CBU (5-7) looked to answer after collecting back-to-back one out base hits in the bottom half of the inning, but Fritz struck out one batter and forced a line out for the final out of the inning.
Tech added three more runs in the fourth to make it a 5-0 ballgame. Peyton Blythe led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to third after an overthrow on her delayed steal of second. Ellie Bailey singled up the middle to score Blythe and moved to third on an Armijo single to right. Jackson followed suit with a single to center field to score Bailey and put Armijo on second. Villa collected her third RBI of the game by singling up the middle to score Armijo, giving the Red Raiders a five-run lead.
Once again, the Lancers put two runners on in the fourth inning, but Fritz struck out the final batter of the inning to keep them off the board.
Kuehl entered the game in the bottom of the sixth, pitching the final two frames allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out two.
