
Recap: Tech rally falls short in loss to Iowa State

All 10 of Iowa State's runs came in two innings while Tech scored in five of the seven innings.
The Red Raiders outhit the Cyclones 13 to 11 but left 11 runners on base and committed two costly errors. Tech led by as many as six runs in the game.
A two-out RBI single from Riley Ehlen that scored Payton Jackson got the Red Raiders on the board in the first inning.
Tech then put up a four-spot in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead off four hits. Molly Grumbo opened the frame with a leadoff home run to left field. The Red Raiders loaded the bases with no outs on a single from Arriana Villa and Jackson brought in one run with a single up the middle, 3-0. Ellie Bailey roped a two out, two RBI double past the diving left fielder to score Jackson and Villa before a ground out ended the inning.
Alanna Barraza added to the lead in the third with an RBI double down the right field line that scored Grumbo from second to make it 6-0 Red Raiders.
After holding Iowa State to one hit in the first two innings, the Cyclones finally broke through with an eight-run third inning to make it 8-6 Cyclones. Angelina Allen got ISU on the board with a two RBI double down the right field line. The next at bat Milaysia Ochoa sent a ball over the center field wall for a two-run home run to make it 6-4. A single to right field made it a one run game and a wild pitch tied things at six. Two more runs would score in the inning, one on an error and another on a single.
The Red Raiders pulled back within a run on an RBI single from Ehlen in the top of the fourth, but Iowa State added pushed the lead to three in the bottom of the fifth with a Mikayla Ramos double that plated two runs, 10-7.
Tech rallied in the seventh, scoring two runs on a two RBI single over the head of the right fielder from Bailey. With two outs and the bases loaded Grumbo hit a ball up the middle that tipped off the glove of the shortstop. The second baseman scooped up the ball and tagged the base as the tying run came in to score. Abbie Orrick was originally called safe at second on the play, tying the game at 10 but after video review the call was reversed, ending the game in heartbreaking fashion.
Olivia Rains (0-6) was credited for the loss in the circle, coming on in relief of Erna Carlin in the third inning allowing four runs on four hits. Carlin pitched the first two innings, keeping the Cyclones scoreless until the third when she allowed five runs on four hits. Kendall Fritz tossed the final three innings allowing two runs on two hits.
NOTABLES
- All nine Red Raider batters recorded a hit in the ball game as Arriana Villa, Carson Armijo, Ellie Bailey, Riley Ehlen tallied two each.
- The eight runs allowed in the third inning were the second most given up in an inning this season by the Red Raiders. The six-run lead was the largest given up by the Red Raiders this season.
- Tech drew 10 walks in the game, the second most this season, one short of tying the season high of 11 against Texas A&M- Corpus Christi (3/13).
- Ellie Bailey matched her career-high with four RBI in the game which she previously set against UTEP (3/19/21).
