Kipyego is one of 30 members in the inaugural class
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Texas Tech track and field legend Sally Kipyego will be a part of the inaugural U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Thursday afternoon.
The first class of inductees' accomplishments – 30 chosen solely on their accomplishments while a collegiate athlete – include 205 national collegiate individual titles, 99 world records and 19 Olympic gold medals.
The Kenyan distance runner came to Lubbock and etched her name into the Texas Tech history books across all seasons – cross country, indoor and outdoor track. She also made national history as well, becoming the first Kenyan to win a cross country national title as she would go on to win three straight (2006-08) becoming the only female runner in NCAA history to accomplish such feat. She is the only woman in Big 12 Conference history to win three cross country titles, and her win in 2008 helped the team to its first women's title in program history.
Several of her marks at Tech have yet to be touched to this day: indoor mile, indoor 3000m, indoor 5000m, outdoor 5000m and outdoor 10,000m. Professionally, Kipyego is a two-time top 5 placer in the 10,000 at the World Championships and in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, she captured silver in the 10,000.
Eligibility for induction this year was limited to men who had completed their collegiate eligibility prior to 2000 and women prior to 2010, with the difference being an effort to increase the number of women eligible, as the men's side of the sport has a much longer history.
