The Red Raiders sweep the award for the first time since 2018
LUBBOCK, Texas – Monae' Nichols and Moad Zahafi have been named the Big 12's Female and Male Track Athletes of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon. It's the first time this outdoor season that the Red Raiders receive the honor.
This past weekend at the Mt. Sac Relays, Nichols landed in the sand pit at 6.86m (22-6.25) as she broke her own school record of 6.80m (22-3.75) on her first attempt. Then on her third attempt, she registered a mark of 6.89m (22-7.25) as it was winded-aided (3.1). Nichols' wind legal mark puts her No. 2 globally as her wind-aided mark is tops in the NCAA.
Zahafi had a record-breaking Saturday in Gainesville, Fla., at the Tom Jones Memorial running in the 800. He recorded splits of 50.94 and 52.76 for a time of 1:43.60, finishing nearly three seconds ahead of the next three placers. It went down as the world-leading time, the No. 3 all-time mark in NCAA history and broke Tech legend Jonathan Johnson's 2004 time of 1:44.77.
