April 27, 2022 | Men's Golf
TRINITY, Texas – Texas Tech junior Ludvig Aberg won the 2022 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship individual title at 8-under-par after shooting a bogey-free, 3-under final round on Wednesday at the Whispering Pines Golf Club. The No. 5 Red Raiders finished the 54-hole tournament in fourth place at 3-under as a team with No. 1 Oklahoma winning the championship at 14-under.
"I felt great throughout the day and hit the ball well to give myself stress-free opportunities," Aberg said. "It's a really tough course but I was really comfortable out there. The Big 12 is the best in the nation and to win it is really cool and a nice accomplishment." Â
Aberg became the second Red Raider to ever win the Big 12 Championship and the first since Chris Ward in 2010. A junior from Sweden, Aberg recorded three birdies in his final round and played bogey-free golf during his final 29 holes of the championship to hold off Oklahoma's Chris Gotterup who finished as the runner-up at 6-under. Bo Jin (Oklahoma State) and Cole Hammer (Texas) were three back at 5-under. Through the 54-hole event that was altered from 72 holes due to rain on Monday, Aberg had only four bogeys throughout his run to the title where he owned the lead going into the final round at 5-under-par. Â
The tournament title is the fourth in Aberg's collegiate career at Tech and follows him winning The Prestige in February in his first win this season. He is currently at No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and is on the award watch lists for the Hogan Award and Haskins Award.Â
"Ludvig played really solid all week," Texas Tech coach Greg Sands said. "He was in command pretty much the entire tournament and had a stress-free final round. It really was an incredible round with the championship on the line."
Tech finished the team portion of the event by posting 286-287-288 (-3), while OU took the title at 14-under which was two strokes ahead of OSU which was at 12-under and the Longhorns who were third at 11-under. OU and OSU both shot 6-under on Wednesday to overtake Texas which held the lead coming into the final round.
Andy Lopez finished at 1-over which put him at 14th, while freshman Calum Scott was 3-over to finished 17th. Baard Skogen shot even-par in his final round and was at 8-over for 25th for the three rounds and Sandy Scott completed the event at 12-over which had him 37th. Â
