The Lady Raiders close the season with at least 15 wins for the 12th consecutive season
BERKELEY – The Texas Tech women's tennis program fell 4-0 in the Round of 32 Saturday to the University of California at the Hellman Tennis Center.
With the loss, Texas Tech closes the season at 15-11 overall.
The Lady Raiders reached the 15-win mark for the 12th straight season and have now advanced to at least the Round of 32 in five of the last six NCAA Tournaments.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Doubles got off to a slow start for Tech, as Cal (18-7) led early on all three courts.
Down a break, Kailey Evans and partner Avelina Sayfetdinova jumpstarted the Lady Raider charge, as the duo won four of five games to take a 4-3 lead.
Metka Komac and partner Olivia Peet also made a late charge, flipping a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 lead. With the chance to serve for the match, Tech was broken, sending court three to a tie breaker.
After Cal won 6-4 on court two, court one also went to a breaker, as Sayfetdinova and Evans were broken at both 5-4 and 6-5.
Tech won the breaker on three, 7-5, but ultimately fell 7-4 on court one.
Armed with the momentum from doubles, Cal quickly closed out a pair of two and zero wins on court one and two over Margarita Skriabina and Peet.
Needing just one more win to seal the match, Cal used a strong opening set and a late break on court three to seal the match.
UP NEXT:
Skriabina and the Lady Raiders will turn their attention to NCAA Individual Championships hosted by the University of Illinois May 23-28.
