Tech garners five USTFCCCA region awards

Head coach Wes Kittley is coming off his 23rd season at the helm
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Texas Tech track and field team collected five Mountain Region awards, highlighted by head coach Wes Kittley taking home the Men's and Women's Coach of the Year honors, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Thursday afternoon.
Kittley, who wrapped up his 23rd season last weekend at the NCAA outdoor meet, led both the Tech men and women programs to a pair of top 10 finishes. The women's side placed seventh, scoring 36 points – program record for the meet. Meanwhile, the men's team finished ninth, headlined by the 800m national champion in Moad Zahafi – coached by Kittley.

Zahafi was named the Mountain Region Track Athlete of the Year. The Moroccan held the No. 1 word time in the 800m (1:43.69) from April 16 to June 14. Last weekend in Eugene, Ore., he was crowned champion with a time of 1:44.49.BOOM ??

Chris Welch represented the horizontals as he claimed the Mountain Region Field Athlete of the Year. Joining Kittley on the coaches' awards was Keith Herston as the Mountain Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year. Herston's squad produced three First Team All-Americans, including the national runner-up in the triple jump in Ruth Usoro. Tech finished second and third in the event.
