McNamara tabbed to Ray Guy Award watch list
July 27, 2022 | Football
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Texas Tech senior punter Austin McNamara was named to the 2022 Ray Guy Award preseason watch list, the Augusta Sports Council unveiled on Wednesday. The annual award honors the nation's top collegiate punter in the FBS.
McNamara, who has now been named to the preseason watch list for three consecutive seasons, is one of 49 candidates on the 2022 list. In mid-November, the Ray Guy Award committee will meet to select ten semifinalists, set to be announced on Nov. 8.
McNamara enters his fourth season as arguably one of the Red Raiders' top punters to play for the program. In 2021, he set the program record for single-season punting average (48.2), booting 42 punts for 2,023 yards. It smashed the Tech single-season record of 46.8 that was set by Mark Bounds in 1991. He is the only Red Raider with two of the top-five punting averages for a season currently in the school record book.
The senior also entered the FBS record book in 2021, bombing eight punts of at least 50 yards in a single game on Nov. 20, 2021 (vs. Oklahoma State). McNamara's eight kicks of 50 yards-plus, broke the previous record of seven that was set by Colorado's Mark Mariscal in a 2002 home game against Southern California.
Once narrowed down to three Ray Guy Award finalists, set to be named on Nov. 18, the three finalists will be voted upon by a national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners. The winner will be announced live during The Home Depot College Football Awards airing on ESPN in December 2022.

About the Ray Guy Award

Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponent's 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
