LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech had two Red Raiders receive Big 12 weekly awards Monday as Trey Wolff was named the conference's top special teams performer, while Reggie Pearson Jr. shared defensive honors.
Â
It marked the first career weekly accolade for Wolff and the second for Pearson as the duo combined to help push the Red Raiders to a come-from-behind overtime victory over No. 22 Texas this past weekend. Texas Tech has now garnered three Big 12 weekly awards so far this season as Donovan Smith was tabbed the league's top offensive performer following the Red Raiders' double-overtime win over No. 25 Houston.
Â
The victory over Texas delivered several key moments, possibly no larger than Pearson falling on a Bijan Robinson fumble in the first overtime period. The Red Raiders followed with a game-winning 20-yard field goal from Wolff on the ensuing possession for their second top-25 win already this season.
Â
The fumble recovery was one of two takeaways on the day for Pearson, who added his second interception of the season on a deep pass in the second quarter. Pearson set a season high with five tackles in a win for a Red Raider defense that limited Texas to only 154 yards of total offense in the second half en route to overcoming a 14-point deficit, its second-largest all-time in the series versus the Longhorns.
Â
For Wolff, the game-winner was his third successful field goal of the afternoon as he also found the uprights from 27 yards out midway through the third quarter and then from 45 yards with only 21 seconds remaining in regulation. It marked the fourth time in Wolff's career he has made three field goals and the first time this season as he is now 5-of-6 on the year.
Â
Texas Tech improved to 3-1 early in the season and 1-0 in Big 12 play with the victory as the Red Raiders will now head to the road for back-to-back games at No. 25 Kansas State and No. 9/7 Oklahoma State. Kickoff between the Red Raiders and Wildcats is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan.
