October 20, 2023 | Women's Soccer
The Red Raiders would clinch the first regular season title in program history with a win
AMES, Iowa – The sixth-ranked Texas Tech women's soccer program heads to Ames Monday night looking to clinch the program's very first regular season Big 12 title at Iowa State.
It's been another historic week for the Red Raiders who were just tabbed as the No. 5 overall team in the NCAA Selection Committee's Top-16 poll that was released last night. Based on the selection, Tech would earn a No. 2 seed in next month's NCAA Tournament. The first four rounds of the 2023 NCAA Tournament (Round of 64-Elite Eight) are hosted on campus by the higher seed in each matchup.
Monday also proves to be an important night for Tech, as with a victory, the Red Raiders can clinch the regular season crown and the No. 1 overall seed for next week's Big 12 Championships hosted by the Big 12 at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.
As the No. 1 seed, Tech would face the winner of the 8/9 match up on Monday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m.
If the Red Raiders fall to No. 2, they will instead take on the 7/10 winner at 5:30 p.m. on Monday Oct. 30
Tech enters the final night of the regular season with 23 total points, two points clear of BYU (21) and three points clear of third place TCU (20). And while Tech controls its own destiny (just needs a win to clinch), the Red Raiders could also clinch the solo title with loss or draw by BYU and a draw or loss by TCU.
The Horned Frogs travel to Austin to face UT, while the Cougars are home for UCF.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
MATCHUP: No. 6 Texas Tech (13-0-4, 7-0-2 Big 12) at Iowa State (6-10-1, 3-6-0 Big 12)
DATE: Monday, Oct. 23, 2023
TIME: 7 p.m.
LOCATION: Ames, Iowa (Cyclone Sports Complex)
LAST TIME OUT:
On the backs of Ashleigh Williams' 13th goal of the season, the No. 6 ranked Texas Tech women's soccer program closed out its first-ever perfect home season on Sunday afternoon, downing the Oklahoma State Cowgirls 1-0 on Senior Day.
The 32nd minute strike came at the perfect time for Texas Tech (13-0-4, 7-0-2 Big 12), as Madison White and the rest of the Red Raider backline helped close out the NCAA leading 10th clean sheet of the season.
On the afternoon, White made another four saves to eclipse 240 saves for her career. The Rockwall native lowered her goals-against-average to a paltry 0.47 and raised her save percentage to 0.857. With her 10th shutout, White became the first goalie since Marissa Zucchetto in 2018 to record double figure shutouts.
None of her four saves were bigger than a two-save sequence in the first half when she stonewalled a pair of chances from Xcaret Pineda. The first stop for White was a sprawling save to her right, while the second one was yet another punch save on a high corner kick.
White continues to shine at home, as she has recorded six straight home shutouts and did not allow a goal at home during Big 12 play. The goalkeeper is the only netminder in the country to have at least 10 shutouts without a loss.
The goal for Williams was the 30th of the junior's storied career, as she became just the fifth Red Raider in program history to record 30 career goals. Williams moved into a fourth-place tie with Kristi Patterson on the all-time goal mark with the game winner, the 13th of her career.
With the win on Sunday, Tech also moves to within one win or a BYU draw/loss from clinching the programs' first ever regular season Big 12 title and closed out the first perfect home season in program history.
