Tech set to play at LCU in fall softball
October 03, 2023 | Softball
UPDATE: The Texas Tech softball program has postponed its fall game against Odessa College that was scheduled for tonight due to potential rain and severe weather. The game will be now be played on Tuesday, October 17. The Red Raiders are still set to play against LCU at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Maner Park on the Lubbock Christian University campus.Â
"I think as we continue to grow is that we see our team playing at a higher level this season," Texas Tech head coach Craig Snider said. "We looked back on last year and see that we can play the game sharper in areas this year. I think we are going to compete and in the mix of things. We are going to be smarter in how we operate. Last year we found ourselves in dogfights and in uncharted waters where you're winning ball games in the year late. You're beating some of the best teams in our conference on the road but weren't able to close the door. That's the big piece for us right now in the offseason and fall. Now it's time to figure out how to take what you've earned. Take what's yours. That's been a big message for us moving forward."
Tech began its fall schedule with a Sunday doubleheader against New Mexico and will follow this week's games by hosting LCU at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10 and Howard College at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11 at The Rock. The final game of the fall schedule will be played against West Texas A&M on Sunday, October 15 in Canyon.
The Red Raiders are coming off a 31-22 record in Snider's first season leading the program that saw new program records in home runs, doubles and slugging percentage. Tech finished the 2023 season with 74 home runs, 93 doubles and had a .543 team slugging percentage. The program also established a record with 14 student-athletes earning Academic All-Big 12 First Team selections. Snider was just the third coach in Tech history to win 30-plus games and five or more ranked wins in their first season.
The 2024 regular-season schedule will begin in February 2024 but has not been announced at this time.
"We are going to play a better brand of ball this year," Snider said. "That's across the board. We'll be better on the mound this year and have a better understanding as a pitching staff of how we are trying to attack hitters. I'm excited for that. Our hitters have another year of learning what pitches we are going to swing at. We'll have a good plan at the plate and defensively knowing where we want to be. We did some cool stuff last year offensively and broke some records but I think we can do some more damage this year with the experience we have back."
