February 25, 2023 | Women's Tennis
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After making the championship match at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders would finish in the runner-up spot of the tournament after falling to No. 38 Wake Forest in the finals, 4-2, on Saturday night.
The Lady Raiders got to the finals behind two sweeps over both No. 58 Yale and No. 31 Arizona between Friday and Saturday. In doubles, freshman Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and junior Camryn Stepp led the way with two wins as a duo, while Dmitrichenko also posted a team-best three singles wins on the weekend. Fifth-year senior Olivia Peet was right behind as she recorded two singles wins of her own. In addition, every single player in singles posted at least one victory at the Blue Gray Classic.
TTU 4, Yale 0 Recap:
In the Lady Raiders' first round match of the Blue Gray Classic on Friday, they were set to face the No. 58 Yale Bulldogs (5-4). Because of a rain delay at the start of the tournament, Tech and Yale would play singles first and continue with doubles if a team did not get four points first… But that wasn't the case as the Lady Raiders posted their sixth sweep of the year with a 4-0 victory over the Bulldogs.
Dmitrichenko continued to roll after she picked up her 15th singles win of the season with a double bagel, 6-0, 6-0, over Yale's Rebecca Lynn at court five. Following this, junior Metka Komac dominated her match as she only dropped one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 win against Sophia Zaslow at court four. In addition, Komac now eclipsed the 50-career singles win mark with this victory.
Over on court three, sophomore Cristina Tiglea provided the Lady Raiders' third point of the match when she posted a straight-set win against Vivian Cheng, 6-3, 6-1. It would be Peet who would clinch her second match for Tech this season when she recorded a win over Rhea Shrivastava at court one, 7-5, 6-2, giving the Lady Raiders their first win of the competition.
TTU 4, Arizona 0 Recap:
The Lady Raiders were set for a rematch with the No. 31 Arizona Wildcats (10-4) in the semifinals of the tournament. Previously defeating Arizona by a 4-0 score on Feb. 18, Texas Tech would get their second sweep of the Wildcats, and sixth overall on the season, after posting a 4-0 win on Saturday morning.
In doubles, the Lady Raiders would dominate their opposition after winning the team's seventh doubles point of the year. First, the duo of Dmitrichenko and Stepp provided a 6-1 win against Midori Castillo-Meza and Belen Nevenhoven at court three.
Clinching the point for Tech were Komac and sophomore Avelina Sayfetdinova at court one after they defeated Parker Fry and Salma Ziouti by a 6-2 score. At court two, Peet and Tiglea were ahead of Reece Carter and Kayla Wilkins, 4-3, when the point was won.
In singles, Sayfetdinova collected another point for the Lady Raiders when she posted a win against Castillo-Meza at court two, only giving up two games in the process, 6-1, 6-1. Next, Peet picked up her second singles win of the tournament after defeating Ziouti at court one in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Clinching her third match of the year was Dmitrichenko after she overtook Tanvi Narendran at court five by two scores of 6-4, helping to put the Lady Raiders in the championship round to face Wake Forest.
TTU 2, Wake Forest 4 Recap:
Texas Tech (8-4) and No. 38 Wake Forest (8-5) were the lone undefeated teams left at the tournament and would play one another in the championship match of the Blue Gray.
The Lady Raiders battled it out in doubles against the Demon Deacons to begin the match. Wake Forest's No. 20 duo of Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth took care of business at court one when they defeated the tough pairing of Komac and Sayfetdinova, 6-3.
At court three, Dmitrichenko and Stepp went a perfect 2-for-2 this weekend in doubles when they beat Nevena Carton and Whitley Pate, 6-2, to even the score. It came down to court two where Peet and Tiglea would lose in a fight to Mia Ahmad and Casie Wooten, 6-4, as the Deacons headed into singles with a 1-0 advantage.
In singles, Dmitrichenko picked up her third win of the weekend, tallying a total of five wins between singles and doubles. She took on Pate at court five and would tie the match at 1-all when she beat the Deacon by a 6-3, 6-1 score. No. 49 Brylin would then take the lead back for Wake Forest when she defeated Sayfetdinova at court two.
However, the Lady Raiders responded again with a huge win at court six. Freshman Arina Oreshchenkova tallied her first win at the Blue Gray Classic when she overtook Maddie Lynch. The freshman would easily win the first set, 6-3, before going down 4-5 to the Deacon in set two. Oreshchenkova fought back and won three-straight games to claim the match, 6-3, 7-5, and tie things up at 2-2.
But, Wake Forest answered with two more wins of their own at courts one and four. Peet faced No. 39 Wooten and forced a third set in the match, but Wooten would go on to win it, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Komac was also in a three-match fight with Carton before falling by a score of 6-4, 3-6, 3-6. Tiglea's match went unfinished as she was tied in the third set with Killingsworth, 3-3, when it was called.
Up next, the Lady Raiders are on the road again next week for two matches. First, they will face UT Arlington on March 3 at 1 p.m., then travel to Dallas for a match against SMU at 11 a.m.
