
Texas Tech falls in extras to Iowa State

LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite taking an early 2-0 lead, Texas Tech fell to Iowa State, 3-2, in extra innings Friday night at Rocky Johnson Field.

With the tonight's eighth-inning loss, six of the Red Raiders (26-12, 0-4 Big 12) 12 losses are now by just a run. It also marked the second extra-innings contest the squad has dropped this season. Tech is 0-2 in extra-innings games.

Texas Tech jumped on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame as Peyton Blythe knocked an RBI single to score Kailey Wyckoff, who reached on a double to left center. Tech tacked on a second run in the next at-bat as a pair of walks and a single from Demi Elder loaded the bases. An RBI fielder's choice from Wyckoff put Tech up 2-0.

Iowa State (12-17, 1-3 Big 12) answered with a solo shot from Kasey Simpson to cut the deficit in half in the top of the third.

A late-innings pitcher's duel commenced as neither side saw more than one base runner in a frame through the fourth, fifth and sixth. However, Iowa State would knot the game at two in the top of the seventh as Ashley Minor roped a single to score Milaysia Ochoa.

After a quiet bottom of the seventh, the Cyclones took the lead once and for all in the eighth after a Mikayla Ramos double plated the leadoff, who reached after being hit by a pitch.

Kendall Fritz (7-3) suffered the hard-fought loss after allowing three runs off eight hits. Saya Swain (4-5) picked up the win in 2.0 innings of relief work. The righty did not allow a hit and tallied a trio of strikeouts.
