Wyckoff named Freshman of the Year, Bailey tabbed first team
LUBBOCK, Texas – Highlighted by the second Big 12 individual award in the program history, Kailey Wyckoff was named the 2023 Big Freshman of The Year while Ellie Bailey took home All-Big 12 First Team honors, the conference announced Wednesday.
Â
Kailey Wyckoff becomes just the second person in program history to earn a Big 12 individual award after Kim Martinez was named the 1997 Newcomer of the Year (that award was stopped after the 2000 season). She is the first ever Big 12 Freshman of the Year for Texas Tech.
Â
She was also named to the All-Big 12 Second Team and the All-Freshmen Team. The utility finished the regular season ranked sixth in the hitter-heavy conference in batting average (.401), fifth in slugging percentage (.755), fifth in OPS (1.215), 10th in runs scored (40), seventh in hits (58), third in doubles (15) and first in triples (5).
Â
For the first time in her career, Ellie Bailey was named to the All- Big 12 First Team. Bailey marks the first Red Raider to be tabbed a first-team selection since Karli Hamilton in 2019.
Â
Bailey has already etched her name in Texas Tech's single-season home run record. She ranks fourth with 16 bombs so far this season. The first baseman finished the regular season batting .342 with a 1.149 OPS after smashing eight doubles, 16 home runs and 43 RBIs.
Â
Wyckoff, Bailey and the rest of the Red Raiders return to action in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament tomorrow against No.2 seeded Texas at 12:30 p.m.
