Texas Tech was tied for the most selections in the Big 12 and ranked tied for fourth nationally
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech had 18 different Red Raiders represented this week on the Shrine Bowl 1,000 list, which lists the top candidates to possibly appear in the nation's oldest college football all-star game.
Texas Tech was tied with Oklahoma for the most total selections among Big 12 Conference schools as the 18 Red Raiders recognized on the list ranked tied for fourth nationally alongside Florida State, Michigan, Tennessee and the Sooners. Auburn led the FBS with 23 candidates followed by both Oregon and Washington with 19 each.
Texas Tech's selections were fairly split between the two sides of the ball with the offense represented by quarterback Tyler Shough, running back Tahj Brooks, offensive linemen Cole Spencer and Rusty Staats, tight end Baylor Cupp and wide receivers Loic Fouonji and Myles Price.
The defense, meanwhile, had nine candidates overall, including defensive linemen Tony Bradford Jr. and Jaylon Hutchings, outside linebackers Myles Cole and Steve Linton, inside linebacker Jesiah Pierre and defensive backs Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, Malik Dunlap, Rayshad Williams and Tyler Owens. Austin McNamara, entering his fifth season as Texas Tech's punter, was the lone special teams selections.
The Shrine Bowl 1,000 list is composed of the top college players from across the country who are currently all-star game eligible and could be part of the 2024 NFL Draft. Texas Tech was last represented in the Shrine Bowl in 2021 when offensive lineman Dawson Deaton and DaMarcus Field took part in the annual event. Both were either drafted or received a NFL free agent agreement that next spring.
The 99th-annual East-West Shrine Bowl will take place Feb. 1, 2024, at Ford Center at The Star, the official team headquarters and training facility of the Dallas Cowboys. The game will be televised nationally on NFL Network.
