The Red Raiders scored twice in the final 20 mins to win Friday’s friendly
DENVER – Powered by a goal and an assist from freshman Sam Courtwright and a goal from defender Elise Anderson, the Texas Tech women's soccer team downed Denver 2-0 Friday afternoon in the lone exhibition match of the 2023 schedule.
In the 2-0-win, Tech outshot Denver 17-6, as 11 different Red Raiders recorded a shot in the friendly. Junior Kaitlyn Giametta came off the bench and was a strong presence offensively for Tech, recording a team-best four shots in just 39 minutes of action.
Fifth-year senior Madison White was strong as usual for Tech, recording a pair of saves to preserve the clean sheet.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a strong first 70 minutes didn't wield a goal, senior Elise Anderson quickly changed that, when she buried a perfect feed from classmate Giselle Kozarski into the upper right-hand corner of the net. The goal was originally set up by a strong run by the second goal scorer Courtwright.
With the lead, Tech did not settle, as Courtwright quickly doubled the Red Raider lead in the 81st minute.
Denver recorded a pair of strong chances to score on Friday, as the Pioneers hit the post on a shot in the 64th minute, while just moments later a Kiera Flanagan shot was turned away by a diving save from White.
In the friendly, nine newcomers saw action highlighted both Courtwright earning the start.
Friday's match also marked the return of 2021 All-Big 12 Freshman selection Macy Blackburn. Blackburn, who missed the final 16 matches of the season after suffering a knee injury, played in 67 minutes on Friday.
UP NEXT:
The Red Raiders open the 2023 season on Thursday when they make the short trip to Albuquerque to face the University of New Mexico. First kick is set for 8:30 p.m. (CT).
