Tech falls to Abilene Christian on the road

ABILENE, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders fell in a four-set match to the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Tuesday night, 21-25, 22-25, 25,20, 13-25, at the Moody Coliseum.
Brynn Williams led the team with 11 kills, while adding eight digs and three blocks. Caitlin Dugan followed with nine kills and Reese Rhodes posted a team-best 16 assists. Two players ended the night with double-digit digs as Maddie Correa had a team-best 15 and Abby Dickinson posted 10.
In the first set, Tech took the 2-0 advantage on kills from Dugan. ACU answered with a 5-0 run, but the Red Raiders responded by winning three-consecutive points, highlighted by blocks from Williams and Hansen, to tie things at 5-5. The set went back-and-forth until Cochran evened it up at 11-all with a solo block, followed by Tech going on a 4-0 run. ACU was able to tie things at 15-15 heading into the media timeout, then took the momentum with them as they claimed the next five points for a 20-16 advantage. Tech forced an ACU timeout after getting a solo block from Williams and a sneak attack kill from Cochran, trailing only by one. But, the Wildcats were able to win four of the last five points to claim the set, 25-21.
Tech was able to win the first point of the second set on a Reagan Engler kill, but ACU claimed the next four points to take a 4-1 lead. The Wildcats kept the lead even though Tech made a 6-1 run to get within a point at 14-13. Again, ACU answered with a run of their own to force a Tech timeout at 18-14. Tech tried to make a comeback after Rhodes blocked the Wildcat hitter, but ACU took the second set by a 25-22 score.
The Red Raiders needed a strong start to the set and they did just that after taking a commanding 5-1 lead over the Wildcats. Tech increased its lead to five when Engler and Rhodes picked up a block, 9-4. However, ACU put together a few points to get within one at 10-9. After that, the Red Raiders would win seven of the next nine points to force a Wildcat timeout with the 17-11 advantage. ACU chipped into Tech's lead but a kill from Currie Marusak gave the Red Raiders set three, 25-20.
It was all Wildcats to begin the fourth set after they took a 5-1 lead. Tech would score on a service error by ACU at 5-2, but the Wildcats won the next five points to lead, 10-2, and force a Texas Tech timeout. Graduate Simeone Overbeck came in a picked up two back-to-back blocks, including a solo one, but ACU kept the lead to close out the set and defeat the Red Raiders with a 25-13 score.

The Red Raiders have a short break before heading to Dallas for the SMU Invitational on Sept. 15-17, where Tech will compete against SMU, LSU and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
