Lady Raiders sweep Gamecocks; Split doubleheader on Sunday

AUBURN, Ala. – Ending the night with a sweep in singles, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders split their doubleheader on Sunday at Yarbrough Tennis Center to the No. 14 Auburn Tigers and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. Texas Tech dropped a hard-fought match this morning to Auburn, 4-2, before sweeping the Gamecocks in the night cap, 4-0.
Against the Tigers (3-1), the Lady Raiders (2-3) would come out strong in doubles to secure the point and take an early lead. First, the duo of Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif picked up a dominant 6-2 victory over Ali Despain and Ava Esposito Cogan at court three. Then, the tandem of Mariya Polishchuk and Cristina Tiglea clinched the point when they defeated DJ Bennett and Adeline Flach, 6-3, at court two.
In singles, Auburn put a point on the board when No. 8 Carolyn Ansari beat No. 69 Tiglea at the top court. But, Polishchuk gave Tech a 2-1 advantage right after when she overtook Ariana Arseneault in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, at two singles.
However, the Tigers finished out the day when they won their matches at courts three, four and five to clinch the contest by a 4-2 score. When the match finished, Sherif was ahead of Despain at court six, 6-4, 5-4.
Moving on to Jacksonville State (3-3) in the evening match, the Lady Raiders secured their fourth doubles point of the season. Tech dominated doubles from top to bottom as Polishchuk and Tiglea defeated Zuzana Pavelekova and Anna Syrova with a bagel, 6-0, at court two, before the No. 5 pairing of Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova downed Polina Ramenskaja and Serafima Shastova, 6-2, at court one to clinch the point. Both Lila and Sherif were on top, 4-2, against Irene Artigas and Dariana Prato at court three when their match was called.
The Lady Raiders needed just three singles wins to close out the match and they got just that. First, Sherif posted her first career dual win at court five after recording a double bagel over Artigas 6-0, 6-0. Komac gave Tech its third point of the night after she beat Syrova over at court four by a 6-2, 6-0 score. Clinching the match was Sayfetdinova at court three as she overtook Prato 6-4, 6-3.
When the match was clinched, all three other Lady Raiders were leading in their matches. At court one, No. 69 Tiglea was ahead of Shastova 6-1, 4-4. Over at court two Polishchuk led Ramenskaja by a 7-5, 3-2 score, and at court six, Arina Oreshchenkova made her 2024 dual debut, leading Pavelekova 6-4, 0-6, 1-0.
Up next, the Lady Raiders travel to California to take on UC Santa Barbara, Kansas and Arizona on February 16-17.
