TexasTech.com Mailbag: Joe Toussaint
March 20, 2024 | Men's Basketball
As the Texas Tech men's basketball team prepares for its 20th all-time trip to the NCAA Tournament, we caught up with senior guard Joe Toussaint to answer your questions for this week's TexasTech.com Mailbag.
To ask questions to your favorite Tech coaches and student-athletes, keep an eye on our social media channels where we will announce future mailbags.
With that being said, let's hear from Joe!
What's your favorite memory/experience so far as a Red Raider?
"There are so many. I'm gonna say it's when we beat Texas A&M in our very first game altogether. We were down like six or four points with a minute and a half to go, and we just pulled through together. We all looked at each other and wanted to win this game so bad for each other, so I felt like that was that was one of my best memories playing for Texas Tech."
Do you do some things lefty? You shoot right but strongly favor a lefty dribble. Wondering if you're a lefty in other sports? If not, how did the lefty dribble preference develop?
"Honestly, I am strictly righty. I do everything right-handed or with my right foot, but my godfather, Tony Wright, taught me at a very young age that I'm going to need to use my left hand in basketball so I'm not limited. So I feel like that's where it came from. My godfather really just pushed that on me when I was younger to use my left hand for everything. I feel like that's why I'm so comfortable with my left hand."
Favorite Restaurant in Lubbock?
"Snooze is definitely my favorite restaurant. I was literally just there before I got here."
What do you think about the first-round matchup against NC State?
"I like it. That's a really good team. They got hot at the right time. They have a really good guard and a really good big. We're going to learn some more about them later on today. I'm going back to NCAA Tournament, so I'm looking forward to playing against them."

What made Texas Tech so special during the recruiting process?
"I liked that it was in Texas. I also loved the coaching staff and their approach to me — they didn't sugarcoat anything, they didn't lie about anything at all. I thought they were very straight up. Also, I felt like I saw the need of this team and that they needed me to come here and help them, and that's what I wanted to do."
How do you maintain such a rigorous playstyle every moment you get on the court?
"Honestly, I just feel like that's installed in me. I feel like that's where I come from. I'm from New York City, The Bronx, so I feel like that's just what what we do. I mean, there's no explaining to it. I feel like it's something you can't teach."
What are your hobbies and interests outside of basketball?
"I'm a gamer. I love my game. I have a PC and a PS5. I love gaming, that's what I do. I also have a dog. I'm a dog dad, so I'm always hanging out with her as well."
Being a senior, what are your feelings after this season going into the next stage of life (after college)?
"To be honest, it hasn't hit me yet. I'm not trying to think too far ahead right now. We have a game that I still have to play, so I'm really thinking about that right now. I'm not really thinking about anything after — just living in the moment."
