Lady Raiders win decisively over BYU

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 28 Texas Tech Lady Raiders picked up their sixth Big 12 victory of the year after defeating the No. 46 BYU Cougars on Saturday afternoon, 5-2, at the McLeod Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (13-5, 6-1 Big 12) picked up an early advantage after earning its 14th doubles point of the year against BYU (12-4, 4-3 Big 12). First, the No. 6-ranked duo of Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova got decisive ranked victory at court one after beating No. 40 pair Emilee Astle and Kendall Kovick, 6-1.
Clinching the point was Mariya Polishchuk and Cristina Tiglea at court two over Bobo Huang and Kaavya Sawhney, 6-1. When the doubles point was won, both Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Camryn Stepp were ahead of Tina Li and Kara Wheatley, 4-1, when their match went unfinished.
Texas Tech would go on to win four first sets in singles. Extending the lead for the Lady Raiders was freshman Jermine Sherif at court five against Wheatley. She would post a bagel in set one, 6-0, then went up 3-0 in the following set. The Cougar challenged Sherif, winning three-straight games to tie it up, 3-3. But, Sherif picked it up and took the match with a 6-0, 6-3 score.
BYU got its first point of the match whenever Astle defeated Arina Oreshchenkova, 6-3, 6-0. But, the Lady Raiders got another victory at court four after Andreea Lila defeated Sawhney in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Clinching the match was Komac at court three against Kovick. The Lady Raider earned a 6-4 win in set one before a back-and-forth second set ensued. Komac and Kovick went into a tiebreaker where Komac took a quick, 4-1 lead. The Cougar tied things up at 4-4, however Komac would win three-consecutive points to win it, 7-6 (4).
Tech's final point of the match came at court one after No. 55 Tiglea picked up her team-leading ninth ranked singles win of the year. She would win set one in commanding fashion over No. 87 Huang, 6-1. The second set was much closer as the two players were even at 5-all. Tiglea would go on and break Huang's serve for the 6-5 lead before holding to claim it, 7-5.
Up next, the Lady Raiders host the TCU Horned Frogs on Thursday, March 28 at 5 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center. Â
