Texas Tech falls to the nation’s top team

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 24 Texas Tech Lady Raiders lost a tough match against No. 1 Oklahoma State on Thursday night, 6-1, at the McLeod Tennis Center.
In doubles competition, No. 7 Avelina Sayfetdinova and Metka Komac came up short against No. 5 Anastasiya Komar and Ange Oby Kajuru on court one, 3-6. But Jermine Sherif and Andreea Lila tied things up on court three with a 6-3 win over Safiya Carrington and Kristina Novak. Texas Tech (9-5, 2-1 Big 12) had Oklahoma State (14-0, 3-0 Big 12) on their heels as Cristina Tiglea and Mariya Polishchuk led Ayumi Miyamoto and Raquel Gonzalez 5-3 on court two, but the Cowgirl duo stormed back, winning 7-6 (5) in the tiebreaker.
No. 85 Tiglea earned the sole point for the Lady Raiders, defeating No. 7 Komar on court one, 6-2, 6-4. This is the highest ranked win of her career, and she moves to 8-3 in dual matches.
Polishchuk gave No. 4 Oby Kajuru all she could handle on court two. After a lopsided, 1-6, first set, Polishchuk bounced back to capture the second set, 6-4. Oby Kajuru ultimately went on to win the third, 6-0, clinching the match for Oklahoma State.
The decision to play out the remaining matches left the 400 plus fans in attendance with a spectacle on court six. Lila took the first set from Kristina Novak, 6-4, but fell short in the second, 3-6. In a third set, ten-point tiebreaker, Novak narrowly earned the victory, 1-0 (6).
Texas Tech will be back at the McLeod Tennis Center Saturday, March 9 to take on No. 65 Kansas State at 11 a.m.
