Texas Tech Spring Game will feature two divided rosters captained by Tahj Brooks and Behren Morton
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Spring Game will have a new format this year as the Red Raiders will divide into two teams with one being led by junior quarterback Behren Morton and the other by super-senior running back Tahj Brooks.
Texas Tech will announce both team rosters in the days leading up to next Saturday's annual Spring Game, which will take place at Astound Broadband Stadium in Midland. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. with free admission for all fans.
In addition to the two team captains, Texas Tech will also divide its coaching staff between the two teams with offensive coordinator Zach Kittley serving as the head coach for one and defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter the other. Joey McGuire will monitor the action at midfield similar to previous Spring Games.
Play-calling duties offensively will be delegated to running game coordinator and tight ends coach Josh Cochran and offensive passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach Justin Johnson. Linebackers coach Josh Bookbinder and defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach Marcel Yates will call the defensive side.
Neither team captain will participate in the Spring Game as both Brooks and Morton will help determine their team rosters in the coming days, which will be announced via @TexasTechFB on X (formerly known as Twitter). Texas Tech's remaining quarterbacks will not be divided between the two teams and will rotate back and forth each series.
The Spring Game marks Texas Tech's return to the Permian Basin area for the first time since 2019 when the Red Raiders concluded a seven-year stretch of hosting either a spring scrimmage or its actual Spring Game in Midland. The area represents one of Texas Tech's largest alumni bases and one of the state's top recruiting regions for prospective student-athletes.
Additional fan information will be announced early next week via TexasTech.com. Fans unable to make the trip to Midland can watch the Spring Game live via Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
