April 13, 2024 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders honored seniors Metka Komac, Mariya Polishchuk and Camryn Stepp en route to a dominant 4-0 sweep over the Cincinnati Bearcats at the McLeod Tennis Complex. The win marks the 10th conference win of the season for the Lady Raiders and finalizes a 7-1 record for Tech at home this year. Â
The Texas Tech Lady Raiders (17-7, 10-3 Big 12) started out on fire in doubles against the Cincinnati Bearcats (8-14, 1-12 Big 12). Stepp and freshman Jermine Sherif broke an early serve from Morgan Pyrz and Sakurako Watanabe to gain a 2-0 advantage over the Bearcats on court three. Pyrz and Watanabe were able to rally back by winning the next two games before Tech captured two deuce points on the way to a 6-3 victory over the Bearcats pair to win the first doubles match for Tech.
Court two's Polishchuk and Cristina Tiglea started their contest against Vic de Samucewicz and Callie Flanagan by alternating broken serves. Despite the early adversity, the Lady Raider duo rattled off three-straight to swing momentum in their favor. Cincinnati was able to temporarily stop the bleeding by winning a deuce point to end the run, but Tiglea and Polishchuk were able to finish the job with a 6-2 victory on court two. The victory marked the 18th doubles point on the season and continued to showcase the prowess of the Lady Raider doubles attack.
On court one, the No. 7-ranked tandem of Avelina Sayfetdinova and Komac split the first six sets on service against Cincinnati's Rozalia Gruszczynska and Gabrielle Guenther. With the match at three all, Tech was finally able to break serve to take the 4-3 advantage over Guenther and Gruszczynska and eventually went unfinished at 5-3.
Momentum continued to build early for Tech in singles with three Lady Raiders jumping out to 3-0 leads. First on court five, Watanabe was able to grab the early lead, 1-0, over Komac. The senior wasn't fazed and was able to rattle off six-straight games to capture a first set victory over the Bearcat, 6-1. Watanabe was able to split the first two games once again in the second set against Komac. Despite that, Komac showed her mettle and again won five games in a row to take the match for Tech's second point of the day.
Sherif on court six continued Tech's dominance by starting with a quick 3-0 advantage over the Bearcat's Isabel Pacheco. Pacheco was able to grab a game from Sherif, but the Egyptian overpowered the Cincinnati player to capture a 6-1 first set victory. Sherif carried her momentum to the second set where she posted a bagel against Pacheco, winning nine-straight games in her match and earned Tech's third point of the contest in commanding fashion.
No. 49 Tiglea continued to be a force on court one with her jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first set against Gruszczynska. On deuce point and up 5-1, the Italian junior was able to maintain pace with Gruszczynska and eventually finished off the first set with a 6-1 victory. Tiglea continued her domination over the Bearcat by going up 5-0 once again in the second set. Gruszczynska was able to secure one game from Tiglea before the Lady Raider won the next, clinching the set and the match for herself and secured the sweep for Tech.
Up next, the Lady Raiders head to Stillwater, Okla., for the Big 12 Tournament starting Wednesday, April 17.
