April 08, 2024 | Women's Golf
After securing the four-seed behind Klara Hurtova’s strong 2-under-par performance in stroke play, Texas Tech defeated Kansas State in match play through wins by Hurtova, Gala Dumez, Kylee Loewe, and Lauren Zaretsky.
NORMAN, Okla. -Â The Texas Tech women's golf team began their final tournament of the regular season on Monday at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, a match-play event, hosted by Oklahoma. The morning began with 18 holes of stroke play to determine team seeding for the event; the Red Raiders posted a 9-over-par 297, earning the No. 4 seed among the eight competing teams, setting up an afternoon quarterfinal match against fifth-seeded Kansas State.
The Red Raiders earned a decisive 4-1 victory over the Wildcats in the afternoon round, advancing Tech into a semifinal matchup versus No. 1-seed Oklahoma on Tuesday morning. The Sooners also claimed a 4-1 win in its quarterfinal match, versus Oklahoma State.
Klara Hurtova led the way for the Red Raiders on Monday as she fired a 2-under-par 70 to lead Tech in the morning; it was the second-best individual score of the stroke play round and the fifth round of par or better in her career. She followed that performance with an 8&7 win to claim the first point for Texas Tech against K-State in the quarterfinal matchup. The freshman's one bogey in stroke play was the fewest among the field of 40 players competing while in the match play round Hurtova won eight of the first 11 holes and tied in just three with no losses.
While Hurtova claimed victory emphatically in the quarterfinal round, a clutch effort from Gala Dumez was also key in the Red Raiders' team triumph. Trailing by three holes after 14 played, the senior roared back, winning four consecutive holes to end the round and claim a 1-up victory over Kansas State's Noa van Beek.
Consistent performances from Lauren Zaretsky and Kylee Loewe helped clinch the match-play team victory for the Red Raiders. After losing the opening hole, Zaretsky birdied and won hole no. 2 and didn't look back, never trailing again in her victory over Alenka Navarro, cemented by a 2&1 win. Similarly, Loewe went wire-to-wire, holding the lead for all 18 holes in her 1-up victory over Julia Ballester Barrio.
The Red Raiders' matchup against top-seeded Oklahoma starts with staggered tee times beginning on Tuesday at 8 a.m. The winner of Tuesday morning's match will advance to the championship on Tuesday afternoon versus either North Texas or Tulsa while the loser will compete in the third-place match to finish the tournament.
