Red Raiders begin summer workouts

LUBBOCK – June 3, 2024… It's approaching 100 degrees outside but inside the Womble Practice Facility the focus is on preparing for the 100th season in Texas Tech basketball program history. It's the first day of summer workouts and the Red Raiders, newcomers and returners, are officially on the court together for the first time after a couple months where the coaching staff constructed the roster. Players were divided into two groups for the first day, starting with an hour in the weight room with strength and conditioning coaches Andrew Wright and Christian Hosley before on-court instructional work. It was a day to set the tone for the rest of the summer and for next season.Â
"Consistency and frequency are king," Wright said. "How often do you attack your goal? Our team needs to know that every opportunity to get better will be afforded in the training environment."

The Red Raiders will have two summer segments, this first one running through June 27 and then again from July 8-31.

On the court after working out in the weight room, Tech players were on the court together in an official capacity for the first time going through instructional drills. The drills started with dribbling, working on controlling possession before drills that had them getting to the basket and scoring through contact. Pads from graduate assistants were the obstacle on this June day, simply simulating what will come against real opponents in about five months when the season begins in November. While the Red Raiders begin summer workouts, head coach Grant McCasland and the USA Basketball U18 team begin play in Buenos Aires, Argentina with their first game tonight at Estadio Obras Sanitarias. McCasland returns to Lubbock next week following the 2024 FIBA U18 Men's AmeriCup from June 3-9.
