
Hlahola earns ranked win at Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Junior Mariia Hlahola recorded her first ranked singles win of the season as the Texas Tech Lady Raiders concluded play at the Michigan Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Tech finished with 10 total wins – six in singles and four in doubles.
Hlahola began the tournament with a dominant win over a ranked opponent. She would defeat Ohio State's Audrey Spencer, who is ranked No. 46 in singles, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Hlahola then picked up another win, this time against Eastern Michigan's Daniella Shved, by a 6-1, 6-2 score. Leading the team in singles wins at the tournament, Hlahola played a close match to the No. 5-ranked player in the country, Julia Flegner of Michigan, but fell by a score of 7-5, 7-6 (2).
Freshman Elena Daskalova earned a win against Ohio State's Sophia Cisse-Ignatiev on day one of the tournament, defeating the Buckeye, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. She then added a team-best second singles win when she saved three match points to take down Viki Hazmukova of Eastern Michigan, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7). Junior Arina Oreshchenkova added a singles win on the final day of competition after beating Eastern Michigan's Marta Komar, 6-4, 6-2. The last singles win came from junior Hailey Murphy, who took down Eastern Michigan's Iva Daneva by a 6-3, 6-4 score.
The No. 57-ranked tandem of Hlahola and Murphy led the team with two doubles wins at the tournament. They would first get a victory against Komar and Shved of Eastern Michigan, 6-2, before recording another win over Ohio State's Sydni Ratliff and Spencer, 6-4. They pushed Michigan's duo of Jessica Bernales and Piper Charney to a tiebreaker but fell by a 7-6 (3) score.
The No. 33-ranked pairing of Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif picked up a dominating win over Daneva and Hazmukova of Eastern Michigan, giving up only one game to win it, 6-1. Daskalova and Oreshchenkova paired up and earned a win over Michigan State's Amara Brahmbhatt and Hanna Tsitavets on the second day of the tournament with the 6-2 victory.
Up next, the Lady Raiders open their dual season at home next Saturday, January 19 with a doubleheader against Xavier and Abilene Christian.
