The Red Raiders and Horned Frogs split the points on Friday night despite Tech having a massive 15-5 advantage on shots
LUBBOCK, Texas – In what was billed as a heavyweight battle between the last two Big 12 Champions certainly lived up to the billing on Friday night, as No. 11 Texas Tech Soccer and No. 17 TCU battled to a 1-1 draw in front of a near capacity crowd at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
In front of the crowd of over 1700, No. 11 Texas Tech (10-2-1, 4-0-2 Big 12) was riding high after 45 minutes due to Raleigh Greason's 25th minute left footed rocket that beat No. 17 TCUs (10-2-1, 4-1-1 Big 12) Olivia Geller far post.
The goal for Greason was her second of her career and first in Big 12 play. She also scored in the Red Raiders opener at San Diego State.
After halftime the Red Raiders had the first chance of the second half when a Taylor Zdrojewski shot rode high of the goal.
In the 54th minute, the Red Raiders were able to ward off a TCU corner kick before a sequence in the 59th minute led to three-straight corners for the visitors. The first corner came on a great defensive effort from center back Emilie McCartney who blocked AJ Hennsey's attempt on the doorstep of the goal for the first corner.
On the first attempt McCartney won the first ball and steered it out-of-bounds for the second Horned Frog corner.
The second corner, a miss-hit was deflected originally by the Tech defense before a 50/50 ball fell out of bounds for the third attempt.
On the third attempt, TCUs Morgan Brown slipped around and under the Tech backline to create space. The service from Sidney Beccera found Brown who headed the ball into the bottom-left side of the net.
In the 63rd minute, the Red Raiders looked to have beaten Geller twice, but a Macy Blackburn cross that beat Geller deflected off the post and bounced out. On the rebound, Peyton Parsons was open in the six-yard box but her shot attempt went just wide of the net.
Just two minutes later it was again the freshman Greason that nearly gave Tech the lead, but her right footed shot on frame was punched wide by Geller.
The Red Raiders had two more shots, one that Geller saved near post and one that went wide of the frame, but were ultimately unable to find the second goal.
In the end, the Red Raiders outshot TCU, 15-5. With the +10 shot advantage, the Red Raiders have now outshot all 13 opponents this season and are +133 in shot margin (229-96) this season.
Tonight's draw between Tech and TCU is third in the last four meetings, with the lone victory in that span being Tech's 1-0 win over the Horned Frogs back in 2023.
Despite not coming away with a victory, the Red Raiders did however extend their season-long unbeaten streak to nine-straight (7-0-2) matches and now are 23-1-3 in their last 27 matches at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
Tonight's crowd of 1,713 is the largest non-NCAA Tournament crowd at the Walker since 2024 when the Red Raiders drew 1,907 fans against BYU in the regular season finale.
With tonight's draw and the other results around the Big 12 Conference, the Red Raiders fell into a tie for second place behind Baylor who leads the league with 15 points. The Bears defeated BYU 4-2 tonight.
The Red Raiders sit tied with No. 25 WVU at 14 points. The Mountaineers overcame deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 to down Houston, 3-2 in Morgantown.
By virtue of tonight's 1-1 draw, TCU slipped all the way down to a tie for fourth with No. 24 Colorado who defeated Arizona State, 2-0. Colorado and TCU both have 13 points, but CU does have the tiebreaker over TCU by virtue of last week's 3-1 win in Fort Worth.
HEAD COACH TOM STONE:
"TCU is a lot to manage and they're a tough team to play against. They're great on the ball and they make you chase it, but we were willing to put in the work which put us in a great position to defend them the best we could, and in some cases extremely well. On the offensive side that was probably one of the most multi-faceted attacking efforts that we've had throughout the year. We were really dangerous and probably should have come away with more. The goal from Raleigh was brilliant and we were just looking for one more."
On Greason's performance:
"Raleigh has been a goal scorer her whole life, but the college game is a different animal. She's really made the adjustment and is making the transition right now and is scoring more goals in practice. Tonight, she looked like it was all clicking for her, and she was seeing it. I couldn't be happier for her. She can score some world class goals and that was a pretty darn good goal."
On Skurcenski's performance:
"Molly is always everywhere. One of the most underrated parts of our team is the play of Molly. She is a crucial cog in our defending and our attacking. Not many players can say that, that they're big on both. Obviously, [Macy] Blackburn can say that, but Molly is just a special player and person. She's unbelievably fit and has a great mentality. She's so fast and her ability to carry the ball through traffic and come out the other side because she's so quick with it is elite level for a college player. She was brilliant tonight."
