Tech wins 29-5 in fall ball game
CANYON, Texas – Texas Tech made its way to Canyon for a 10-inning fall ball game against West Texas A&M on Sunday afternoon. The Red Raiders flexed their muscles as were able to score in every inning on their way to a 29-5 victory thanks to 14 extra-base hits including six home runs.
Tech had a multitude of impressive performances led by Taylor Pannell who went 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a home run and two RBI. Pannell also reached on an error and played a lockdown third base. Logan Halleman, Makayla Garcia, Desirae Spearman, Alana Johnson and Lagi Quiroga all recorded three hits in the game as both Spearman and Quiroga left the yard.
Mihyia Davis, Mia Williams, Hailey Toney and Kaitlyn Terry recorded two hits each as Lauren Allred and Jackie Lis each launched home runs.
Terry had a light out performance in the circle as well, going 3.0 innings allowing just one hit and striking out six Lady Buffs. Spearman went 2.2 innings, striking out five and allowing just two runs while Samantha Lincoln went 3.0 innings with four strikeouts and gave up just one run. Chloe Riassetto logged 1.1 innings, allowing just two unearned runs with a pair of strikeouts.
How it Happened:
Pannell got things started for the Red Raiders with a two-out double and would come around to score one at-bat later thanks to double by Johnson. Terry allowed her lone hit in the first inning but struck out two batters – a theme she would follow throughout her time in the circle.
Toney led off the inning with a single and came around to score after Quiroga legged out a triple. Garcia traded placed with her as she roped a triple of her own to make it a 3-0 Tech lead. Terry, again, struck out two batters on her way to hanging another zero on the board.
Spearman started the barrage of power, hitting a solo home run to center field in what was a five-run inning. Davis reached on a single and came around to score on a double by Williams. Williams would score in the next at-bat after a single from Pannell who would then steal third base and advance home on a throwing error trying on the throw down to get her out at third. Toney would then smoke a solo homer into left field before Terry threw another perfect inning, striking out two batters.
Garcia added another Red Raider run on an RBI single that scored Allred from second. The Lady Buffs scored two runs via a home run in the bottom of the fourth, but Tech got those runs back thanks to a two-RBI single from Halleman in the fifth. The defense got an impressive 6-4-3 double play and Spearman struck out the last batter to keep the Red Raiders lead at 11-2 going into the sixth.
Terry would be responsible for both runs in the sixth inning as she hit an RBI single and set up Garcia to cross home plate on a delayed steal, setup by Terry stealing second. Lincoln took over in the circle, striking out a batter as West Texas A&M got one run back. Williams and Pannell recorded back-to-back singles and with runners on the corners, Halleman laid down a beautiful bunt single to score Williams. Toney drove in Pannell before Lis crushed a ball into left center field to make it a 15-3 game.
Lincoln would allow no runs and would strike out three batters as Spearman and Davis added more runs via a single and triple in the eighth. The ninth inning had an out pour of scoring for Tech thanks to a solo homer by Pannell and Quiroga with a grand slam off the bat of Allred sandwiched in between. Spearman picked up her third and fourth RBI of the game on a single and would come around to score on an error to make it 28-3 Tech going into the final inning. Davis made a spectacular diving catch in center field to save an extra-base hit as Riassetto hung a zero on the board.
Allred would record the final Red Raider run with an RBI as the Lady Buffs would add two unearned runs before Spearman came in to strikeout the final two batters.
UP NEXT: Tech's usual Tuesday and Thursday scrimmages this week are canceled and instead the Red Raiders will have live hitting on the field from 6-9 p.m. on those days which will be open to the public.
