LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire earned his second National Coach of the Week honor in as many days Tuesday as he was recognized for the Red Raiders' top-10 win over No. 7 BYU by the Bear Bryant Award.
McGuire, who was named The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week on Monday, has led the Red Raiders to a 9-1 start to their season and a 6-1 record in Big 12 play following Texas Tech's 29-7 victory this past Saturday over previously unbeaten BYU. Texas Tech will be looking to reach double digits for only the seventh time in program history this Saturday when the Red Raiders host UCF.
Texas Tech created three takeaways and consistently frustrated the BYU offense that was limited to only 255 yards of total offense. BYU's seven points, meanwhile, marked the fewest allowed by the Red Raiders against a top-10 team since Texas Tech knocked off No. 8 Texas A&M, 14-7, in 1995.
The Red Raiders have boasted one of the nation's top defenses this season under McGuire, ranking third nationally in points allowed per game (12.6) and total takeaways (23). Texas Tech is the FBS leader in rush defense, giving up only 73.8 yards a contest. BYU was held under that average, finishing with only 67 as a team with 35 coming from LJ Martin, the Big 12's leading rusher entering the game.
The addition of a suffocating defense has combined well with another high-scoring offense as the Red Raiders are fourth in the FBS currently at 42.1 points per game, which trails only Indiana (44.5), North Texas (44.4) and Tennessee (43.6) among schools nationally. Texas Tech is the only school in the FBS to rank in the top five for scoring offense, scoring defense and takeaways per game.
McGuire has turned the Red Raiders into a serious Big 12 title contender in only his fourth season as he is now 32-17 overall following the BYU victory. His record is the best for a Texas Tech head coach through 49 games since Jim Carlen was 32-16-1 early in his fifth season leading the Red Raiders in 1974. Carlen won his next game – his 50th on the Texas Tech sideline – defeating No. 6 Texas, 26-3 at home.
The victory over BYU was Texas Tech's second over a team ranked in the top 15 of the initial College Football Playoff rankings as the Red Raiders previously knocked off No. 13 Utah to open Big 12 play on the road. Texas Tech is the lone FBS team with multiple wins over teams in the top 15 of the CFP poll currently and the only school in the top 10 of the rankings with three or more wins over opponents with seven or more victories currently. Texas Tech has won all nine games by at least 20 points this season, which easily leads the FBS and matches the most in school history.
The College Football Playoff selection committee will unveil a new set of rankings at 6 p.m. this evening on ESPN.
