Toppin earns Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

LUBBOCK – Texas Tech sophomore JT Toppin has secured his third Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honor of the season after averaging 18.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in a pair of games against TCU and West Virginia last week. Toppin began the week by extending a streak of four straight double-doubles with 14 points and 11 rebounds at TCU on Tuesday night before going off for 22 points and eight rebounds in a home win over West Virginia on Saturday.
Toppin is now averaging 17.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game after going over 20 points scoring for the 10th time this season. He put up the 22 points on 9-for-16 shooting against the Mountaineers, including matching a career-high by making two 3-pointers. His 11th double-double of the season and the 23rd of his career came in Fort Worth where he was 5-of-9 from the field and pulled down four offensive rebounds. He has now scored in double-figures in five straight games and in 18 of the 23 he's played in this season. Toppin is currently third in the Big 12 in scoring and rebounding averages and second by shooting 57.1 percent from the field.
This week's award comes after he was named the Associated Press National Player of the Week, Big 12 Player of the Week and Big 12 Newcomer of the Week last week. Over the past five games, Toppin has averaged 26.0 points and 11.8 rebounds for the Red Raiders. A Dallas native who transferred to Texas Tech after playing his freshman season at New Mexico, he now has 843 points, 536 rebounds, 96 blocks and is 354-for-592 (59.8 percent) from the field through 59 games in his collegiate career. He earned national and conference honors last week after posting a career-high 41 points and 15 rebounds against Arizona State and then 32 points and 12 rebounds at Oklahoma State. Toppin earned his first Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honor on November 25 after dominant performances in a three-game week for the Red Raiders that began with a 24-point, 12-rebound double-double against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at home and then producing 15 points in a win over Syracuse at the UKG Legends Classic.Â
No. 10 Texas Tech hosts No. 4 Houston at 8 p.m. tonight at United Supermarkets Arena before traveling to play at Kansas on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse. In home games this season, Toppin is averaging 19.4 points, 10.3 rebounds and is 103-for-169 (60.9 percent) from the field. Â
