March 14, 2025 | Women's Tennis
FORT WORTH, Texas – Both Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif earned two wins on the evening, but the No. 14 Texas Tech Lady Raiders suffered their first conference loss of the season after falling to the No. 44 TCU Horned Frogs, 4-2, on Friday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
TCU (9-4, 4-1 Big 12) earned the doubles point against Texas Tech (11-2, 4-1 Big 12) to open the match. At court one, the No. 23 pair of Jade Otway and Isabel Pascual first defeated No. 5 Mariia Hlahola and Avelina Sayfetdinova, 6-2.
The Lady Raiders evened it up after Lila and Sherif got a comeback win over Maya Drozd and Yu-Chin Tsai at court three. After going down 0-3, Tech won six of the next seven games for the 6-4 victory. However, TCU clinched the doubles point with a win at court two when Raquel Caballero and Tomi Main overtook Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy by a 6-4 score.
In singles, Tech tied the match at 1-all when Sherif took down Cayetana Gay at court six in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. TCU retook the lead after Cabellero defeated Hlahola at court two, 7-5, 6-3. But, the Lady Raiders evened it up again when Lila overpowered Tsai at court four. Lila took a 2-0 lead in the first set before Tsai came back to tie it up. After tying it at 3-all, Lila would win the next three games to take set one, 6-3. A similar thing happened in the following set as the Lady Raider was up 2-0 before both players tied it at 3-3. Lila would go on to win three of the next four games for the 6-4 set two victory and made it 2-all in the match.
The Horned Frogs put up another point in response, though, when Otway beat Sayfetdinova at the top court, 7-6 (5), 7-5. Tech would have to win out the two remaining courts in order to clinch the match, but TCU was able to force a third set at court five, then come away with a win there to take the match by a 4-2 score. At court three, Dmitrichenko and Pascual were tied 3-3 in the third set when it went unfinished.
Up next, Texas Tech heads to Waco, Texas to face the No. 20 Baylor Bears on Sunday at 1 p.m.
