Lady Raiders advance in Big 12 Championships

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Three Lady Raiders were in double figures as 14-seeded Texas Tech dropped the 11-seeded Kansas Jayhawks in the opening round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championships, 57-53, on Wednesday night at the T-Mobile center.
The Lady Raiders (16-16) were led in points by junior Bailey Maupin with 12 after she made some clutch free throws at the end of the game to help Tech defeat Kansas (16-14). Maupin recorded her 23rd double-digit performance on the season and added three rebounds and an assist in the game.
Junior Jasmine Shavers added 11 points in the game on 5-for-13 shooting for her team-leading 28th double-figure game. She also totaled three boards and two assists in the win. Also recording 11 points was redshirt junior Denae Fritz, who went 4-for-8 from the field and led the team with three 3-pointers. Fritz tallied four boards and two assists as well as led the team with three steals and two blocks against the Jayhawks.
Junior Kilah Freelon had a great night after going 3-for-4 from the field with a team-best seven rebounds and three steals. Graduate Maya Peat scored eight points on 80 percent shooting from the field in just 13 minutes of play, helping propel Tech to the victory. Junior Adlee Blacklock also came off the bench and provided a spark, going on a 5-0 run for the Lady Raiders with a jumper and a 3-pointer.
The Lady Raiders shot 43.5 percent from the field (20-for-46) and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc (6-for-18). Tech outrebounded the Jayhawks 37 to 24 and forced 15 Kansas turnovers while only allowing the Jayhawks to shooting 37.5 percent from the field.
Fritz started the game with a 3-pointer to give Tech an early lead. Kansas answered with a 6-0 run before Fritz nailed another three to tie it. The Jayhawks hit one right back, but Maupin responded with a triple to tie it at 9-all. Tech would then get a layup from Peat thanks to a dish from Fritz for a 5-0 run. Peat continued that run with another bucket right after. Kansas was able to stop the run with a three at the 1:46 mark, then made a jumper for a 14-13 lead. But Tech got the answer from Shavers, who scored with 33 seconds left to give the Lady Raiders a 15-14 lead at the end of the first.
Kansas scored the first three points of the second period, going ahead by a 17-15 score. Tech would get an offensive rebound from Freelon, who immediately scored to tie it up. The Jayhawks went on a 5-0 run after this, until Shavers and Fritz made a few baskets for a 6-0 run, including a steal and a fastbreak layup from the Tennessee native to take a 23-22 lead. Peat would score a layup and then Loghan Johnson made a free throw for a 26-26 tie. Tech would go on a 7-3 run to end the half, highlighted by five points from Blacklock, to lead 33-29.
Maupin began the third quarter with a successful and-one play, making a layup then the free throw for a 36-29 advantage. Kansas scored its first points of the period at the 6:21 mark, but Fritz hit her third triple of the game for an eight-point lead going into the media timeout. Shavers hit a wide-open three coming out of the timeout, then Kansas went on a 4-0 run to answer, making it 42-35. Both teams would remain scoreless for the remainder of the quarter as Tech held onto the seven-point lead.
Kansas outscored Texas Tech 6-1 to open the fourth quarter, cutting its deficit to two. Shavers was able to stop their run after making a tough layup through traffic to increase the lead to 45-41. However, the Jayhawks scored five-straight points to get their first lead of the game, 46-45. Tech evened it back up with a Freelon free throw, then she added four more points to make it 50-46 with 2:47 left. Maupin added a free throw before Kansas scored a layup to make it 51-48. With 27.3 seconds left, Freelon grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up to put Tech ahead by five. Both teams traded free throws, then Kansas hit a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left to cut the lead to 55-53. But, Texas Tech was able to draw a stop on defense and add a couple of free throws to win the game and move on, 57-53.
