The Red Raiders tie a program record with 13 Big 12 wins on the year
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 14 Red Raiders (33-9, 13-1) clinched their fifth straight Big 12 series of the season and have tied the program record for most Big 12 wins in a season with 13 following their 6-2 victory over Houston (20-18, 3-12) on Saturday evening. Tech is also on its first 10-game winning streak since 2011.
NiJaree Canady picked up her 17th win of the season in the circle after throwing 3.1 innings and allowing just two hits and one run while striking out four. Freshman Samantha Lincoln picked up her second save of the year as she pitched the final 2.0 innings and gave up no hits while striking out four batters, including the last three Cougars of the game.
Alana Johnson roped her sixth home run of the season into left field as eight different Red Raiders recorded hits on the day. Lauren Allred added two RBI to her total as Alexa Langeliers and Raegan Jennings each drove in runs.
Tech's defense was again solid, having no errors for the seventh straight game. Victoria Valdez had a great game that won't show up in the box score as she laid down two perfect sac bunts which allowed the Red Raiders to score and also threw a runner out trying to steal. Valdez also had to catch three different pitchers and did a good job controlling the game behind the plate.
How it happened:
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead with a two-run homer in the first inning. That would be their on offense of the day, however, as Chloe Riassetto, Canady and Lincoln coupled with Tech's defense was able to settle down after that.
Tech got a run back in the first with Langeliers RBI and then another run in the second to tie the game at two on a Raegan Jennings pinch-hit RBI.
Allred gave Tech the lead with a single up the middle that scored two runs and Johnson added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homer.
UP NEXT: Tech will host Houston in the series finale at noon tomorrow.
