LUBBOCK – Texas Tech sharpshooter Chance McMillian will have an opportunity to put his skills on display this week at the annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament.
McMillian earned All-Big 12 Second Team and NABC First Team All-District honors during his fifth-year senior season where he helped lead the Red Raiders to a 28-9 overall record, a 15-5 mark in Big 12 play and to the program's third NCAA Elite Eight appearance. McMillian shot 43.3 percent from 3-point range to lead the Big 12, finishing the season 71-for-164 on 3-pointers. He averaged a career-high 14.2 points per game in his second season at Tech where he was also 69-of-78 (88.5 percent) at the free-throw line. McMillian, who played the first three years of his college career at Grand Canyon, finished with 1,467 points and by making 245-of-600 3-point attempts through 155 career games.
The P.I.T. showcase has provided opportunities every year since 1953 for 64 senior college basketball player seniors from across the nation to compete before professional scouts. Eight teams of eight players play a 12-game tournament over four days, with each player hoping to reach their dreams of becoming a professional basketball player. McMillian will play on the Portsmouth Sports Club team along with Moussa Cisse (Memphis), Andrew Carr (Kentucky), Cameron Matthews (Mississippi State), Adama-Alpha (Santa Clara), Joe Bamisile (VCU), Earl Timberlake (Bryant) and Chucky Hepburn (Louisville). McMillian's team will begin the P.I.T. at 6 p.m. (CDT) on Thursday with the event wrapping up on Saturday at Churchland High School in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Over the years, the P.I.T. has welcomed players that are now household names, like Rick Barry, Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, Dave Cowens, Scottie Pippen, Tim Hardaway, Dennis Rodman, Jimmy Butler and more. For Texas Tech, Kevin Obanor recently participated in the P.I.T. where he helped his team win the 2023 championship title and earned all-tournament honors.
