No. 14 Red Raiders defeated Utah 7-4 on Sunday to complete the series sweep
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 14 Texas Tech (31-9, 11-1) earned its third Big 12 sweep of the season and first Big 12 home sweep since 2016 as they defeated Utah (12-27, 4-8) 7-4 on Sunday afternoon in come from behind fashion.
Down 4-1 heading into the fifth inning, the Red Raiders needed to make a run. They had opportunities in the second and third innings when they had bases loaded but were not able to get the timely hit they needed. Coming up to bat following back-to-back singles from Alexa Langeliers and Bailey Lindemuth, Alana Johnson finally got the rally going that Tech had desperately needed.
Johnson roped a single into center field to score Langeliers, which set up runners at second and third again with no outs after Johnson got to second on the throw into home. Victoria Valdez then took a ball down the left field line to score two runs and tied the game 4-4.
Logan Halleman came in to run for the catcher and got to second with her 15th stolen base of the season. Mihyia Davis, with the infield playing up, smoked a ball through the right side of the infield which allowed Halleman to dash her way home and give Tech the 5-4 lead.
NiJaree Canady came into the game in the second inning after Utah got four early runs and was again masterful. She allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out eight batters as she shut down the Utes offense for 6.0 innings.
The Red Raiders offense wasn't done, however, as Alana Johnson again was clutch and launched a ball into left center field to add two more insurance runs. Canady struck out the final three Utah batters to secure the 7-4 victory and series sweep.
Lindemuth and Johnson combined to go 5-for-8 with four RBI and three runs out of the five and six holes and proved to be the major difference in Tech's comeback.
Tech's defense was stout as well, having no errors for the third straight game – the first time since 2023 that has been done.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will remain home to face Houston in a three-game series starting at 6 p.m. on Friday night.
