Red Raiders's star two-way player garners another prestigious award
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Big 12 Conference announced its 2024-25 Male and Female Athletes of the Year on Thursday. Texas Tech's NiJaree Canady was named the Female Athlete of the Year, becoming the first Red Raider – male or female – to win this prestigious award.
Canady led the Red Raiders to their best season in school history this past year, finishing as the Women's College World Series National Runners-Up in the program's first appearance. Tech also won its first Big 12 regular season and postseason titles behind the right arm and bat of Canady, who was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and Most Outstanding Player of the Big 12 Softball Championship.
The two-way star earned several awards for her performance on and off the field as she was named a consensus First Team All-American by NFCA, D1Softball and Softball America, the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America Team Member of the Year, the Honda Sport Award winner for softball and a top three finalist for the USA Softball Player of the Year.
Canady led the team in home runs (11) and virtually every pitching statistic highlighted by a 1.11 ERA to go along with 319 strikeouts, both of which rank second in program history for a single season. Her 34 wins in the circle not only tied the program record but was the most in the country and her 82.9 win percentage set a new program record.
The rising senior is set to return to Lubbock for her fourth year as the Red Raiders reloaded to make another run at the WCWS.
