Red Raiders host first practice of preseason camp

Texas Tech went through a nearly two-hour workout Monday to start preseason camp
LUBBOCK, Texas – After months of anticipation, Texas Tech was back on the practice fields Wednesday at the Dustin R. Womble Football Center with a roughly two-hour workout to officially open preseason camp.
It was a date circled on head coach Joey McGuire's calendar for months, signaling the end of so called "talking season" and a chance for him to get his full team – freshmen and summer transfer additions included – on the field for the first time. The Red Raiders have been among the most-discussed teams in college football for the past few months, something McGuire acknowledged Monday when he met with the media as part of Texas Tech's Local Media Day event.
"We're going to embrace the pressure," McGuire said. "We're going to talk how you deal with it. You control what you can control, and that's being on time and taking care of your body during camp and then emptying the tank during practice. If you walk off the practice field and can say 'I emptied the tank today, you don't have to be perfect but if you did empty the tank today, you won that moment. We're going to just start stacking days."
The Red Raiders will follow a schedule of three-consecutive days of practices followed by an off date over the next three weeks until moving to a mock game week on Aug. 17. McGuire and his staff will put the Red Raiders through two closed scrimmages on Aug. 9 and Aug. 16 inside Jones AT&T Stadium, which should help settle many of the depth questions heading into the season.
McGuire likened the Red Raiders' current depth, especially on the defensive front, to talented teams he had been part of in the past during his preseason camp media availability. McGuire will update the media again Thursday following the Red Raiders' second full practice.
