Morton named to 2025 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy watch list
July 31, 2025 | Football
ATLANTA – The Wuerffel Foundation announced on Thursday that Texas Tech senior quarterback Behren Morton was named one of its record 116 nominees for the 2025 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy. The award is annually presented to an FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
The award, which is coined the premier award for community service, has been awarded since 2005, and is named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winner and University of Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel.
A quarterback alike, Morton has become a mainstay in the West Texas community while not lighting it up on the football field on Saturdays. Morton is an active participant with the South Plains Food Bank, participates in classroom visits within the Lubbock ISD, is a Lubbock Impact Volunteer, visits Lubbock Area hospitals, and is a sports volunteer at area youth camps. Morton, a West Texas native, attended Eastland High School and is the son of a longtime area high school football coach, which gives the Lubbock community a special meaning for the senior quarterback.
Morton enters his fifth year at Texas Tech this fall with a bachelor's degree, earning it in May 2025. He's also a previous academic All-Big 12 first team honoree.Â
Previously tabbed to the Maxwell Award watch list on Monday, which is given to the most outstanding player in college football, it culminates with a strong campaign for Morton early among the individuals on the Wuerffel watch list. The Red Raiders have had recent history with the award, as Tony Bradford Jr. was named one of 12 semifinalists for the Wuerffel Trophy in 2022.
The 2025 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy finalists and recipient will be selected by a national voting committee, with input from a fan vote. The 2025 recipient will also serve as Captain of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards show on Dec. 12, airing on ESPN. The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Presentation Gala will follow on Jan. 31, 2026, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
