The Red Raiders outshot Denver 23-3 and used three second half goals to close out their third-straight exhibition win at DU
DENVER – Emma Torres' strike less than 15 minutes before halftime and three second-half goals from Sophie Neves, Kaitlyn Giametta and Taylor Zdrojewski pushed No. 25 Texas Tech to a 4-0 exhibition win Thursday night over Denver at Denver Soccer Stadium.
After a fast start that saw the Red Raiders rip five early shots in the first 10 minutes, the game took on a physical slower pace over the next 20 minutes as both teams sought the ever important first goal.
The Red Raiders nearly found that goal midway through the 21st minute when a gorgeous free kick from Sam Courtwright found Giametta in the six-yard box. The forward was able to get a foot on the end of the service but her shot was saved by DUs Molly Wissman.
On the front foot once again, three minutes later the Red Raiders nearly dented the scoreboard again when Courtwright's through-ball found a streaking Zdrojewski over the Pioneers backline. One-v-one with the keeper, Zdrojewski was fouled in the box, awarding on the Red Raiders a PK.
Stepping to the spot, Macy Blackburn ripped a low-line drive that beat Wissman before clanging off the inside of the post and going over the endline.
After the second and final save of the evening from goalkeeper Faith Nguyen kept the game scoreless, the Red Raiders finally broke through in the 35th minute when a corner kick skipped through the box and found Torres around 25-yards out.
The freshman took a touch and bent a left footed rocket into the right-hand corner of the net for the ever-important first goal.
Armed with the lead, the Red Raiders nearly scored their second goal when a corner kick with less than 30 seconds to play resulted in a Blackburn shot that was saved by Wissman.
Playing the first 45 minutes, Wissman made four saves.
Looking to put the game away after halftime, the Red Raiders did just that, when a cross along the endline from sophomore Alana Harry found another newcomer in Sophie Neves.
Parked right in the middle of the six-yard box, Neves headed the ball home past substitute DU goalkeeper Alina Santos. The header gave Tech a 2-0 lead.
The 2-0 lead quickly became 3-0 just eight minutes later when off a corner kick again delivered by Courtwright, Giametta headed home the Red Raiders third goal of the night. The goal which came just 12 seconds into the 69th minute was the second header goal of the night.
Looking to close out the clean sheet, Tech got one last goal, a wicked shot from Zdrojewski that rose over Santos and into the back of the net.
Down the final minutes, the stout Red Raider defense closed out the clean sheet, as Tech ended the match outshooting DU 23-3.
In the end, 26 of the Red Raiders 30 players saw the field in the exhibition victory.
