No. 17 Lady Raiders outlast Mountaineers in Morgantown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Bailey Maupin scored a season-high of 27 points to propel the No. 17 Texas Tech Lady Raiders to a 71-66 victory against the West Virginia Mountaineers on Wednesday evening at Hope Coliseum. This is Tech's first win in Morgantown since Jan. 14, 2015 and only the third time in program history winning in Mountaineer territory.
No. 17 Texas Tech (17-0, 4-0 Big 12) remains the only undefeated team in Big 12 play as Maupin led the team with 27 points and a career-high four 3-points, shooting 53.3 percent from the field (8-for-15) and 57.1 percent from behind the arc (4-for-7). She went 7-for-8 from the free throw line and added four rebounds, three assists and a steal against West Virginia (13-3, 3-1 Big 12) for her 15th double-figure scoring game and third 20+ scoring game of the year.
Senior Snudda Collins also posted her 15th double-digit game with 19 points on 50 percent shooting from the field (6-for-12). She went 6-for-7 from the line and had three rebounds. Leading the way on the glass was Jalynn Bristow with nine rebounds, while also recording a career-best of three assists. Denae Fritz posted her second-straight game of making three 3-pointers as she totaled nine points and eight rebounds on 60 percent shooting from the field (3-for-5).
In a close and gritty game that saw 15 lead changes and five ties, the Lady Raiders shot 44.4 percent from the field (24-for-54) and an impressive 47.1 percent from behind the arc (8-for-17). Texas Tech outrebounded the Mountaineers 37 to 33, while adding 16 offensive boards and 12 assists in the game. The Lady Raiders also held West Virginia to under 40 percent from the field (.387) and to 28.6 percent from the three (6-for-21).
The Mountaineers scored the first points of the game with a layup. Tech answered right back as Bristow scored one of her own to tie it. The Mountaineers made a free throw for the lead again, but Tech went on a 6-0 run thanks to buckets from Maupin and Collins for the 8-3 advantage. West Virginia would follow with 13 of the next 17 points to lead by four, but the Lady Raiders got a three from Maupin and a turnaround jumper from Collins to lead 17-16 after one.
Collins made an offensive putback layup to begin the second period, then WVU scored one right after. Sarengbe Sanogo was able to make a fastbreak layup thanks to an assist from Maupin for the 21-18 lead. However, the Mountaineers went on a 5-0 run to take a 23-21 lead heading into the media timeout. Sanogo stopped the run with a layup out of the timeout to tie things at 23-all. This sparked a Lady Raider run as Fritz and Collins made 3-pointers to lead 29-23. West Virginia stopped the momentum with the next five points, but Maupin made two free throws to end the quarter for a 31-28 advantage for Tech.
West Virginia made it a one-point game with a layup at the start of the third period. Fritz answered with another three, but the Mountaineers scored five-straight points for the lead. The scoring went back-and-forth until West Virginia made a couple of baskets in a row to lead 46-43 and force a Tech timeout with 3:03 left in the quarter. Fritz was able to hit another triple, then Bristow scored a reverse layup to get within three. Both teams made a couple of free throws to end the quarter with the Mountaineers leading 53-50.
The Mountaineers made three free throws to start the final period, before Maupin made a second-chance three in response. West Virginia made a layup right after for the 58-53 advantage as both teams would go scoreless for almost two minutes. Tech got a layup from Jada Malone, then a second-chance jumper from Maupin after grabbing her own rebound as the Lady Raiders trailed by one going into the media timeout. Out of the timeout, West Virginia scored three more free throws before Tech went on a 9-2 run, highlighted by a three from Maupin and free throws from both Maupin and Collins. Maupin was able to get a steal with 16 seconds left, then made a free throw to lead 67-63. Gemma Núñez added another steal with 10 seconds left, then Collins extended the lead with two free throws to make it 69-63. The Mountaineers hit a 3-pointer with 3.7 seconds left but Maupin made both her free throws on the following possession to ice the win at 71-66. Â
