Red Raiders fall to ASU in Big 12 Match Play finale
October 14, 2026 | Men's Golf
SALT LAKE CITY — The Texas Tech men's golf team fell 3-2 to Arizona State on Wednesday at Salt Lake Country Club in the reworked finale of Big 12 Match Play. Weather postponed the start of the fourth round Tuesday, forcing tournament officials to cancel Wednesday's fifth round, which altered the rescheduled fourth round to determine co-champions for the event.
The Sun Devils were named co-champions alongside Oklahoma State, which won its match via tiebreaker on the other side of the bracket against West Virginia.
The match remained close through the front nine, with Arizona State establishing control first through a pair of decisive victories as matches entered the back nine. Peer Wernicke defeated Price Hill 5&4, and Bowen Mauss defeated Alvaro Pastor 5&3.
The Red Raiders locked in a pair of wins behind Tim Wiedemeyer earning a 3&2 win over Nguyen Anh Minh, and Ben Gregg defeating Boston Bracken 2&1. Wiedemeyer took the lead six holes into his match and never relinquished it, while Gregg moved ahead eight holes into his match and maintained the advantage through the finish.
Adam Bresnu, who entered the final match undefeated through his first three matches, battled Connor Williams throughout the opening nine holes. Williams took a two-hole lead with back-to-back birdies on his 10th and 11th holes before Bresnu answered with a birdie on No. 12 to cut the deficit to one. Williams then recorded another pair of consecutive birdies to move 3 up. After the two matched one another on hole 16, Williams secured the 3&2 victory.
Bresnu and Wiedemeyer led the Red Raiders with three wins apiece during the tournament, each finishing with a 3-1-0 record. Gregg went 2-1-1, while Hill (1-1-0), Simon Hovdal (1-2-0), and Pastor (1-2-0) each collected one win.
The 2026 Big 12 Fall Match Play marked the seventh edition of the tournament, which began in 2019 and returned this season after being suspended last year. Texas Tech won the inaugural tournament in 2019 and claimed its second title in 2022.
The Red Raiders concluded their fall schedule Wednesday and will return to competition Feb. 4-6 at the Amer Ari Invitational on the Big Island of Hawai'i.
