Texas Tech adds to its personnel department with Chase Adams and Freddie Johnson in scouting roles
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire announced Tuesday two new hires to his personnel staff in Chase Adams and Freddie Johnson, who will serve as associate directors for scouting.
"We're excited to add both Chase and Freddie to our personnel staff," McGuire said. "This program's roots are established in the great high schools and coaches of this state. Their experience as Texas high school coaches will only add to our personnel department as we continue to identify the top players to join our program."
The two hires are part of Texas Tech's increased efforts to further strengthen its personnel department under general manager James Blanchard. McGuire previously announced last week the promotion of both Quintin Jordan and Brian Nance to assistant general manager positions and Sean Kenney to Nance's previous title in Director of Player Personnel. All three are charter members of McGuire's staff who arrived prior to the 2022 season.
As part of Texas Tech new personnel structure, Texas Tech will have five staff members whose sole responsibility is identifying and recruiting top talent to the football program. Blanchard will continue to oversee the operation in his role as general manager, while Nance and Johnson will specifically focus on high school prospects with Adams and Kenney strategizing potential transfer additions.
Texas Tech was at the forefront of college football's evolution to stand-alone personnel departments as Blanchard was McGuire's first hire upon accepting the Texas Tech position. Since then, Texas Tech has been among the most-consistent programs in the country in signing top transfers out of the portal to go along with top-25 high school classes.
Texas Tech, coming off its first Big 12 title and first College Football Playoff appearance, ranked as high as No. 13 nationally by ESPN and No. 17 by 247Sports for its 2026 high school recruiting class, while its latest additions through the transfer portal was listed as high as second nationally by ESPN.
Part of Texas Tech's success has been through its ties to the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA), an area both Adams and Johnson will add to with multiple years of experience coaching at the high school level. McGuire already had nine members of his staff with previous THSCA experience, including four full-time coaches in associate head coach Kenny Perry, offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich, offensive passing game coordinator Justin Johnson and offensive run game coordinator Josh Cochran.
Adams joins the Texas Tech staff from Richardson ISD in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex where he was most recently the quarterbacks coach for Richardson High School. He began his tenure at Richardson in 2019, helping push the Eagles to multiple district championships in football, while also contributing to the basketball and track and field programs. Adams previously worked as part of Desoto ISD and Dallas ISD, bringing with him 10-plus year of experience to Texas Tech.
Johnson, meanwhile, arrives following five seasons in various roles at Legacy School of Sport Science in the Houston area where he was the defensive coordinator, defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator until being promoted to head coach following the 2025 season. He helped produce more than 50 college signees during his tenure to go along with two state championships. This will be his third stint at the college level after previously serving as a defensive quality control coach at Oklahoma Panhandle State from 2015-18 and then Langston University in Oklahoma from 2019-20.
Both Adams and Johnson began their Texas Tech tenures on Monday.
