LUBBOCK, Texas – Senior Hailey Murphy went 5-0 in singles and doubles this weekend to earn her first career Big 12 Player of the Week award announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
Murphy helped the Texas Tech Lady Raiders to wins over Arizona and Florida State this weekend after going 2-0 in singles with a ranked win as well as 3-0 in doubles, all coming at court one, en route to her first career weekly conference honor.
Against Arizona in a nonconference match, Murphy paired up with Yekaterina Dmitrichenko to take down Josie Usereau and Maria Garcia, 6-1, to help Tech win the doubles point. Murphy would go on to clinch the 4-3 win over the Wildcats with a come-from-behind win at court one over Martyna Ostrzygalo, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3).
Against Florida State, No. 62-ranked Murphy and Dmitrichenko teamed up again to defeat Tina Li and Laura Putz, 6-1, and aid Tech to another doubles point. She did not get to start her singles match as the Lady Raiders already swept FSU, 4-0, before she could play.
Against host-team UC Santa Barbara, No. 62 Murphy and Dmitrichenko clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory against My-Anh Holmes and Isabella Wong as the duo would go 3-0 this weekend and only dropped four games in those matches. In singles, Murphy earned a ranked win to make it 3-0 in Tech's favor after she beat No. 100 Ekua Youri by a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (2) score at the top court.
Murphy is second on the team with five dual singles wins and is the only Lady Raider to remain undefeated in dual singles matches. In dual doubles, Murphy is second on the team with seven wins.
Up next, the Lady Raiders head to Tucson, Ariz., for the Arizona Invitational on Feb. 20-21.
